Here's the article: http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=120970 .... but the shaping issue is to correctly position the point of maximum draft (POMB) fore/aft ---- for the purpose of *helm balance* ... not for 'flattening' although the more forward the POMB is positioned (and ignoring helm balance) the more the leech 'opens' (resulting in less overall sail camber, thus a measure of flattening in the aft/leech sections of the sail ..... but the forward sections become more deeply drafted and more 'rounded', at the same time the leech section become 'flatter').
Flattening is the result of outhaul tension (and 'mast bending' on boats so equipped with the proper on-the-fly mast bending equipment, etc.)
;-)
