Yes I have seen one operating

I have a friend with a 53 ft. motoryacht and he installed one. We were aboard for a week last year and it worked great. We went from Beaufort, NC down to Wilmington during this time. Even when motoring down, or up the waterway at 18 knots the picture was steady and good except when the antenna was obstructed. Bridges momentarily interrupted the signal. I would not expect it to work in very rough conditions but swinging at anchor is no problem for it. My friend wrote an article about his Follow-Me TV in last months issue of the Power Squadron magazine, the Ensign. If you would like my friend Harold's e-mail he could tell you more.

Have One.....

I recently purchased a sailboat that had one of these. I've only used it a couple times, but it does track very well. I had the boat moved quite a ways from it's original berth, so I had to set everything back up for my location. However, once you're locked on and the system has found the satellite, it stays on very well. At anchor it will easily track.

Never while underway....

I haven't tried the system while underway. Only used it while at anchor. I assume it would work perfectly while underway however - no reason that it wouldn't. Remember - many times there will be more than one person on board a boat when it's underway.....

Reply to Peggy - Proper lookout

Peggy I mentioned that I was a guest aboard this yacht with follow-me tv. The captain of the boat was keeping a proper lookout. This vessel has a tv in the main salon and in the Florida room aft. All of us aboard were not needed on the bridge to keep a proper lookout. I assure you, I do not watch tv while keeping a proper lookout. I did take the helm of this boat from Wrightsville Beach to the Cape Fear River up to Wilmington and that was a great experience. With the shoaling on the ICW and commercial vessel traffic on the Cape Fear I assure you I didn't watch TV during my turn at the helm but my spouse was watching and the owner of the vessel were watching while the Captain and I were on the bridge. I also did often look at the Garmin Chartplotter.

I knew I'd get a rise out of that! :)

Otoh, accidents are being caused by people watching DVDs in their vehicles while driving (as if talking on the phone weren't distracting enough!), so why not onboard too? Still...you're all on a beautiful boat, travelling along a route with all kinds of sights to see (don't tell me it's just a "ditch" through there with nothing to see--there's always SOMETHING to see, and I have hundreds of slides to prove it)...but instead of being on deck or on the bridge to see and photograph 'em, everyone who isn't needed on the bridge is watching tv... If you're gonna do that, why bother to leave home? But speaking of "proper lookout:" most of us assume that only the person on the helm is required to keep a lookout...and often is the only person aboard TO do it. But if we were to follow the strict letter of the Rules, at least two people are needed--one to helm and one whose sole responsibility is that of lookout. Just thought I'd mention it. I've stirred the pot enough for now, so I'll return you to your tv program now in progress....:)
