I have an O'Day 31. Just out of curiosity, what's the likely gain in boat speed between a regular prop and a feathering or folding prop? Thanks

Accel & low air speed...

You won't really have more speed, but less drag. This will show up in better acceleration and better speed in lower air. Once the air gets so high, it will overcome the drag of the fixed prop...

it makes a difference

I installed a feathering prop on my B331 last year. While it is true that your top speed won't necessarily be higher I would say that my speeds in medium and light winds increased 1/3 to 1/2 knot.

Like they say . . .

As the others have pointed out, you will not see a noticeable gain in top speed but you will see an increase in acceleration and light day performance. You're top speed is governed by your length (mostly) so if you're already hitting hull speed you're not going to go much faster. On the other hand on summer drifters it could mean the difference between sailing and motoring. You need to assess the conditions you sail in to decide. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
