Folding Prop

I have a 1978 Hunter 27' with a Yanmar 8Hp . I am considering installing a Martec folding prop, Two blade. On a boat like this, is the gains in performance worth the price of the prop? I would like to hear from anyone who might have installed a prop like this on this boat? Thank you.

Guessing that this is probably the worst prop...

for your boat. Your prop walk is to starboard. These Martecs do NOT help the backing power of the boat at all. You need to rev the engine a lot to get them to open. If I were you and want sailing performance, I'd stick with a two blade fixed prop. You will gain a little on sailing speed but you may be very disappointed on the motoring capability with your engine.

Almost agree with. . .

Steve. I feel that my folding Flex-O-Fold gave me a LOT more sailing speed. And just that, a feeling. But I also gained a little in both forward and reverse. Steve's right, rev her up in reverse then back off and go to neutral, fight for steerage. http://www.flexofold.dk/

Ed, it's not the same prop.

Ed: These Martecs are dinky little props. They really do not have much blade area. I do not think that you can compare a Flex-o-fold to a Martec. You also are not as under powered as his boat either.

i disagree with both

i installed a martec folder on a YSB 12 yanmar on my catalina 30(yea i know it's not a hunter) but the improvement was TREMENDOUS.I purchaced it used on line somewhere for about $200. In forward under power i gained almost 1 knot, and reverse do have to gun the engine a bit more than what you are used to but it worked great, just practice a bit. the sailing performance improved equally at almost a knot (via GPS readings). part of the increases under power is due to the fact that you can most likely increase the size of the prop in dia. I went from a 12x10 to a 14x8 due to the fact that the hub of the martec is longer and you are able to swing a bigger prop because the curve of the aft section of the hull goes up and gives you more room for bigger blades. I don't know where the idea of smaller blades came from but the blades on my martec were at least 25% bigger that my old 2 blade michigan.....i loved it and so did the preformance of the boat...just one mans opinion, find a cheap used on and you will not regret it (check minney's in california ) chet p

For Flex-o-fold..

I have fine experience installing Flex-o-fold on my Hunter 29.5 , and gained not only on sailing speed , but on motoring too , on ALL rpm range, compared to 3 blade fix 'cruising' one ,supplied with the boat anew.. However , keep in mind that you start with relatively limited power- I might say underpower-to begin with, and after so many years the 8 hp engine will deliver a max of 6hp and at cruising rpm the propellor wil get around 3 hp. Don't expect too much..

Rudder Distance

On my 1983 27'Hunter I am considering a 15" Flex-O-Fold , however there is not enough distance between the end of the shaft and the rudder once the prop is folded. I would have to modify the rudder by removing about 7" at the leading edge and adding aft of the rudder. Any suggestions?

Steve, don't!

I think that is a mistake, to modify the rudder I mean. If you were to install the Flex-O-Fold right now how much clearance is there between the prop hub and the bearing strut? In other words, is there room to shorten the shaft? On my H37C the prob hub is 3/4" from the strut. Did you ask Flex-O-Fold if they can shorten the hub? How much clearance do you need? I know that hub seems awfully long. If you can't shorten the shaft then you need a fixed prop or a feathering prop, something that doesn't fold back six or seven inches.
