Folding Prop Problem

Folding prop (Fallbar?) bronze has failed in forward. I purchased this vessel last August and the prop has operated very well. During the past several weeks it would hang up but would eventually engage however it will not provide thrust for forward. The reverse position is OK. The blades can be moved manually in and out. The transmission operates in either direction. It appears but not confirmed that when in forward gear the propellar blades are spinning on the shaft. We are located on inland lake outside of Nashville and do not have the facilities to pull the boat at HIYC. I would appreciate any input on why the prop works in reverse but not forward.

Maybe is is loose

Are you sure it is not on backwards? Or maybe is is just loose on the shaft? Good Luck. --Dan

Spinning prop

Larry, I think Don is onto something about it being loose. In reverse you might be getting a little more tension to make it spin properly. Break out you mask and fins and see if you can tighten it down a bit. I hope this helps Charlie

I was in the shallow water today and examined the prop closely and all is tight and secure. All components appear normal. I can manually open and close the blades. The prop shaft at the transmission when in gear will only turn in the opposite direction so all appears OK there. Are you aware of a clutch adjustment for this Volvo 2002 engine? Thanks for you input.

Folding prop F32s5

Thanks Don but I checked out everything I could today in shallow water. All looks OK and nothing is loose. We have run over 100 hours since our purchase last August and the folding prop has only recently been a problem. This is the first time that I have been unable to get it in gear.

confirm torque

Is the shaft turning with any torque? Start the engine and engage the transmission in forward and try to stop the shaft manually. I would use a pair of welders leather gloves to grip the shaft (be very careful) to see if the torque is being transmitted to the shaft or if it is just turning (freewheeling). The difficulty may be in the transmission clutches. Jim
