Catalina Capri 22 Mk II Salem Harbor
Sailing out of Salem harbor this morning, I could see fog off Marblehead neck. By the time I got to Beverly farms/West beach, Marblehead (three miles south) was gone; shortly thereafter Salem, too, was lost. With confidence in my hundred dollar hand held gps, I left the security of Beverly's coast and crossed befogged Salem sound. For half an hour or so all was white. From time to time, I'd spy a numbered channel marker which gave me a fix on my chart. I don't know what makes fog (warm air over cold water ?); whatever, gps is a (maybe "the") solution. Any luddites out there not yet geared up, I heartily recommend a simple hand held where you load in important locations/way points. Finding my way home in the fog ? Easy peasy.
