I'm a fan of the mouth-powered version. Maybe it's my Healthy Lifestyle (KOFF! KOFF!) but I have no problem blowing it as loud and as long as necessary, and it seems at least as loud as any air-powered horn, and louder than the electronic ones. AND it can sit for years and still work when you need it. Also, you can point it where you want to, whereas a permanently-mounted horn only blows in one direction.

If you're lazy, I also have the pump-up air-horn ones.

Bells have their place

Bells, as a sound signal have a special purpose and are not supposed to be a substitute for a horn signa.
How about a BELL???????? :)
Basically they're supposed to be used when at anchor or aground.

The nice thing about something like the Standard Horizon loud hailer is there is a switch setting for each one of these conditions.

If you're anchored in pea soup fog on a moonless night when someone else is trying to come into the anchorage, it's nice to be able to flick the switch on and be legal. In addition, throwing on the deck light also would help, as well as being on deck with the pressurized air horn just in case.

In this situation cow bells and a barking dog will be most effective.

How about Mrs. Smith's bell she used to call us in from recess in first grade? You could hear that thing at 130 dB at 2 miles no sweat.

My fog bell is a dining car bell from the Pennsylvania Rail Road.
