Why do all of the waterproof binoculars available have individual eye focus mechanisms? I have a pair given to me as a gift, and I find them very difficult to focus. Its hard to hold onto the glasses while moving both eyepieces at the same time, especially on a heaving deck. Its gotten to the point that I have gone back to my compact non-waterproof binocs because they have a center-focus mechanism. Am I missing a trick here on focussing the waterproof pair, or do others have similar problems?

eyes. Each person has different eyes strengths etc, and your left eye will differ from your right. Without knowing what binocs you have, in general: close your right eye and adjust the monocle for your left eye until your field as you look through it is clear for you. Then close your left eye and focus back and forth for your right eye. Now the binocs should be set up for your eyes. I am guessing that you have continuous focus binoculars, so after you set them up, you can just look through them without the need to focus. If this doesn't make sense, reply and we'll see if we can work it out. Regards, AD

Center focus waterproof binoculars are available
I have a pair of Tasco's like you describe. I like them but they are a pain to focus. The good news is that there usually isn't a lot of need to refocus when in open water.BUT I bought my wife a pair of compact waterproof Binoculars that have center focusing. I've seen full sized models also, at West Marine. I'm sure other suppliers have simular models.

Steiner makes a center-focus binocular for birdwatching, but a center-focus binocular will never be as rugged, and therefore will never pass the navy specs. It's interesting to note that warranty for Steiner marine binocs is 30 years, but for the Steiner center-focus binocs is only 10 years.
