Woody: Check out Latex rubber for the sleeping surfaces. Yes it is worth the expense. No mold or mildew in the rubber vs foam. Much better sleeping surface and it will last for 20+ years. We had a new 3 piece mattress made for our H36 (long double) and it cost us $500.

The seating surfaces can use a much cheaper traditional foam. A good marine upholstery shop can help you with grade & density options.

I suggest that you contact US Yacht Cushions in Florida. They actually know what they are doing. They can also guide you as to materials. You don't want the stuff that you would use in a home (no cotton) and you also need abrasion resistance. They use material like Sunbrella upolstery products (not canvas) and stuff that is used for commerical seating.

The latex is great, but if you are looking for something less expensive we bought the Lux Foam - High Quality in 3 inches thick for our V-berth and like it very much...

http://www.foamreplacement.com/seatcushion/foamtypes.html

They had good pricing and free shipping. They will also cut to a pattern if needed. We cut ours.

We also bought the same to replace the mattress in our teardrop trailer and next week will be ordering more for the cabin cushions and are looking at covering those with Sunbrella 1351-0000 Annapolis Nautical 54" Yachting Collection Fabric .....

We are also going to try their Dry Fast for the cockpit cushions and see how we like it. We are going to cover them with Phifertex Plus Vinyl Mesh ....

....from sailrite. Our present ones are Naugahyde covered and once wet take for ever to dry. We hope that these will dry much faster.

Anyone have any experience with the Phifertex Plus or the Annapolis Nautical Yachting Collection Fabric?

Ruth will be doing the sewing and I'll be the helper,

Sum

Hi Sum,

Wrap your cushions in dacron, you won't regret it.

Hi Sum,

I'm not an upholstery expert, but my father-in-law is(been his business for 45 years). He replaced all the cushions inside using Sunbrella (...he put me to work:)). He had me cut the new foam(his son is a supplier....yes, I lucked out on all of this;)) It was like a white, super whammy dyne foam....couldn't tell you the name, then had me wrap it in dacron(don't know the proper name for that.....batting?)My old, original cushions did not have it. It does make a big difference in feel, breathes, and installs in the covers easier, not to mention a bit cushier(is that a word?) He used some other foam (4 inch)for the V-berth that made sleeping on it literally like night and day(I'll ask him what the foam was if you want).

Plan on doing the cockpit this year. That fabric you have picked out looks like the outdoor cushion fabric he uses for pools and such. It wear well, has good fade resistance, and dries quickly. It just isn't the nicest stuff against bare skin. I need to get my bro-in-law to get some of that closed cell foam. He has this HUGE horizontal band saw that he cuts it with. Not sure about color for cockpit yet.

C Ya,

John

Yep the Dacron and batting and what you use are all the same thing. Our old cushions didn't have it either, but like you I think we will like it. We have the V-berth covered and love the new mattress It is just 3 inches thick, but has a 55 lb. ILD, the highest they had and more comfortable than the bed at home.

The fabric for the cockpit is the outdoor. On the 'bare skin' deal I'll just keep my pants on . We might have to throw a towel over it if it is a problem. Our present cushions just take forever to dry if they get wet, which they do, and we want something that dries quicker.

We thought about the closed cell foam, but all that I looked at was just to stiff to be sitting on day after day, but I'll keep an open mind on it if you or someone else has a suggestion. From what I can tell it is like the stuff in a PFD.

Well thanks for the input and you guys made some really nice looking cushions,

Sum and Ruth (she is watching this thread also)

The new 2010 Sailrite catalog is 25 pages more than last year. Most of it is the Sunbrella fabrics being shown.

do no tuse lates--is very allergenic--the dust from it rotting is absolutely horrible to lungs....use a nonlatex closed cell foam if possible and top with a memory foam enclosed in a waterpruf cover--goood luck....btw--latex IS natural rubber and 75 percent of the population if htis planet are allegic to it--it becomes moldy easily and rots quickly.....black mold is as bad as the latex dust produced by its rotting....goood luck......

ps==traditional foam in most boats is latex foam..lol......
