In my opinion, the best place is as far forward in the boat as possible, as this keeps away from the engine. I have my fluxgate mounted in the forward cabin on the starboard bulkhead.Keep away from light fixtures as well.
I have a ST6000 autopilot with the fluxgate mounted under the aft berth. It is about 8+ feet away from the engine and I have had no problems with it in that position.
that Chris Oldham originally mounted his fluxgate compass under the aft bunk on his 450 and he had problems with it because of the innerspring matress. It had to be relocated. I suspect you would have the same problem with your 420. You might want to check his web site passagemaking.com to find out where he finally mounted it.Mark Johnson
