I am installing a new X-5 autopilot but I have kept the old compass (ST4000). I have not gone through the calibration yet but the fluxgate is about 55 degrees off. My guess is that even if I go through the calibration process it won't correct 55 degrees. I suspect something else is wrong. Has anyone gone through the calibration/set-up and corrected even close to 55 degrees?

you can not determine if the compass is correct until you go through the calibration process. It only takes a few minutes for the sea trial to calibrate the flux gate with the ships compass or known heading. If that fails to align the compass then go to Raymarine's website for the values that you should have on the wires coming from the fluxgate compass. If it is not a Raymarine compass you can use the NMEA input values.

Thanks. I performed the calibration and the compass corrected. Now I have a different issue in that my binnacle compass is off by about 7 degrees. It appears this is caused by the autopilot wheel. When I remove the steering wheel the Ritchie compass comes back and aligns with the fluxgate. Is there a fix? Thanks.

...I have some variation in mine...if im heading north the heading on the control head and the binnacle compass agree...as I head to south the variation increases to about 6-7°...by-the-way Raymarine is less then stellar on customer service, however I do love that X5.

Calibration should fix that. The compasses have not really changed much since the early to mid 90's and still export the same data they did back then. Yours could be bad, but swing it first to check..

Best to find a professional compass adjuster to adjust and create a deviation card for your binnacle compass...
