We have a Hunter 2001 380 and have had a couple problems with the pump in the Jabsco head leaking. One of the times it was not effectively pumping the waste away and effluent was backing up into the toilet.We replaced the pump twice so far and this time everything seems fine. My question is: Could the fact that we use only fresh water from the adjacent shower hose be the culprit? Does flushing with sea water keep parts in the pump lubricated and in working order? We also had problems with leakage after using vinegar as was suggested by the Head Mistress, Peggy Hall.

Neither fresh water nor vinegar had anything to do with it. That you had to replace the pump twice is not surprising...Jabsco toilets are famous for their low price, not their quality OR their quality control. They're among many large mfrs--and not only in the marine products business--who've found it to be cheaper to repair or replace than to invest invest in higher quality materials, production methods and tight quality control.

Carol:Flushing with FRESH water keeps your head smelling a lot better. If you use raw water (sea water), you can get little sea critters inside the lines and then the die and do not smell too good. Vinegar is a very mild acid. It will help keep the salts from urine from building up in the system too. We use vinegar around the house for cleaning our floors and other things.You can probably get away with raw water flushes and then just flush the system with the vinegar and fresh water when you leave for any extended periods of time. If you do not mind the fresh water flushing, I'd just keep doing it. The only problem that you are going to have with fresh water is if you are treating it with bleach or some other chemicals that could be reacting with the seals and orings in the head.
