Hi all,
When does a Flush beat a Full House? When you finally get the new head working. It took many hours, a lot of planning, several shopping trips, broken tools (not the ones I borrowed), broken parts (Thank you Raritan for replacing them), and skin off the knuckles to get it done. Check out the controller pad by the TP.

Well wasn't that the most pleasant thing to look at first thing to get my day off and running . Looks like a very nice job of installing. Was the access there before or did you have to add it for the new install? I hope the hands aren't to badly damaged.

What happens if you for some unknown reason loose power now .

Exactly! I don't know why people are so insistent of manual toilets. Most of us have become so dependent on engines, autopilots, gps, radios, etc etc that I just don't see why people, especially ones with significant others on board, feel the need to still pump by hand.

We love our push button potty. We also have a manual Lavac in our second head. And then there is always the trusty 5 gal bucket.

My strong opinion is that the electric heads are simpler to maintain than a manual head with the exception of the Lavac. Of course, you need to have the power to handle the load too.

You might need a large formal sign saying something to the effect that "On a boat, Everybody Sits, Male or Female... and if in doubt, just sit on it!"

Since the fiberglass floor unit was 4" above the floor we added the access hole to feed the wires and hose. I have to nip the trim ring so it clears the bevel near the side wall. I also thought a spare battery with jumpers to the controller might get a needed flush if we do get a Full House.

It is ironic huh?

BUTT, (pardon the pun) considering all the systems on a typical sailboat, even a daysailor, the head is the one that people least understand, sometimes even the boat owners. Shoot, if presented with a manual flush unit right now I would not be able to comfortably operate it correctly, knowing without a doubt I was not screwing something up.......

It is for this reason I put an electric unit in my humble little 27.... If I can't comfortably and knowledgeably operate something correctly, how can I explain it to my guests?

Wow Phil, that looks great. Did you raise the floor to get a comfortable hieght? I just ripped out the second head because the formica and plywood base had deteriated and I've been thinking of what to replace it with. Since there's always some moisture around I'd like to seal it up in some way.

Thanks! I should have shared already that your install looks really porfessional! Nice job!

The little pedestal I made was built the height it was so it could be tied back to the original head platform. If you look closely in the third pic you can see how the top of the pedestal extends back and over the original. That was the only solid way I could figure out how to guarantee level, AND provide a popsitive fastening scenario. SO... It is actually 3/4" higher than I really wanted, but it is a good height still.

I like formica and plywood, but used void-free plywood. It seems to last better. I considered adding a coat of epoxy under the formica, but was concerned I would create an uneven surface that the formica might not stick to as well. I also decided to leave the back of the pedestal uncoated. As a guy who has dabbled in wood boat restoration, I know epoxy keeps water out, but it can also keep water in.... My hope is the pedestal will be dry enough there that the wood won't get wet, but if it does, it should be able to dry more quickly without a barrier.

On your second head, if constant moisture is an issue what about King Starboard? I woould think with adequate bracing underneath it might be a suitable material, its easy to cut, and it should provide a rot-proof pre-finished surface. Thoughts?
