I was in Key West last week and noted the number boats at anchor. Some could be cruisers staying for a while, or a season. Others are clearly live aboard and some are just flotsom. I took some pics. I'm going to post a few at a time. Let's play - Is it flotsom or is it a cruiser?

I think all three are cruisers. The one with the birds has an open foredeck hatch, I think.

The mooring situation in Newport Beach, CA is you can't leave a mooring unattended for a specified period of time without losing it. Those with a mooring and either without a boat or between boats put a derelict on it to retain ownership.

It's the law of unintended consequences. The harbor made the rules without imagining how the boaters would work around them. Kinda sad having the gypsy fleet moored in a beautiful yachting harbor.

# 1 is flotsom, unkept to say the least, listing to starboard probably from water coming thru that open hatch and a garden growing on the hull. # 2 & 3 are cruisers well secured, fenders out motive power under sail or motor available.

My Vote..

Flotsom. We recognize this as there a couple of boats in our marina that have become habitat for the mink. I guess they gotta live somewhere!

Flotsom or Cruiser

#1 is definitely a cruiser. The bow down attitude indicates that the vee berth is more than likely being used as a jacuzzi supplied by naturally pure rain water being filtered through the carpeted headliner. The forward hatch would need to be open for ventilation over the Jacuzzi. You wouldn't want mold and mildew on the interior too would you?

They call this "Buddy Boating"

Came across these two powerboats while cruising.

Notice the "dingy" tied alongside.

When I look at even the most derelict boat I think...front and rear pulpit: $700, winches: $300, all manner of sheaves and blocks, $30-$150 each, front hatch cover: $300, swim ladder: $350, teak handrails: $90 ea., nav lights: $50...

Why leave in abandoned? ....eBay is your friend.

I sail to KW every year from St. Augustine. It has gotten progressively worse for legitimate cruising vessels. If you really want to research flotsam v. cruiser, circle wisteria island and look down in the water. Do it in a dinghy and count the hulls. You might be surprised!

You can't imagine the cost of an apt in KW... most that do the labor in the keys can't afford to live there. Maids / housekeepers, etc. are typically bussed in from the mainland (homestead).

nantucket live aboard.

Also, I forgot to add, some locals say the only way for normal folks to own a boat is to anchor it. The cost of a slip is prohibitive. So when the local NIMBY's nix another marina or expansion of an existing marina this may well be what they get.
Here's some more photos (But its hard to top that Nantucket shot):
At least the sailboat has sails on. The ScareCrew boat has the anchor tied off the bow eye - I don't think he's planning on moving the boat soon.

I would like to make an offer the Nantucket boat. She looks like a good choice for an offshore trip.

Not sure what this would be

Saw this at Oriental NC. Looks like somebody is living aboard since they charged for the dock space.
