Charlie, Most keel boats do not have positive flotation; the mac's are an exception. However, the mac's are much more lightly built than most other boats, so presumably are more prone to sinking in a collision or severe storm. I would say that if you sail on inland lakes, no worries at all. If you go out in a large bay with high winds or on the ocean, I would either reinstall the flotation or make sure that a blow-up raft was near at hand.
