Are the 2" x 4" dirty molding flotation blocks in my Oday 20 necessary. If so what can they be replaced with. Most were missing when I got it.

No! Unless you have a thing about having your boat stay on the surface when it capsizes and fills with water.
You can replace them with 2 inch thick extruded polystyrene foam from the home stores or you can just paint them with acrylic house paint.

test the paint on just one block..... to make sure... some paints are not happy with foam... perhaps a good use for all the PAINT stored in the "garage" for "someday...."..

I had all the blocks out of my venture one Saturday last summer while working on some wiring, when I climbed back out, I found my wife had wrapped the blocks with 6mil visclean plastic sheet sealed with duct tape, no more little bits of styrofoam all over the boat. Guess she is a keeper:dance:

Try Lowes Hardware parking lot. I was given styrofoam blocks by the salesman in the parking lot. They use them for transporting their trailers. The guys said that they don't recycle them. They are the perfect size and are already wrapped.

Maybe empty plastic soda bottles with the caps on nice and tight. Maybe fill them with packing peanuts if handy?

There are many varieties of foam plastic used in packaging. I found some that was used to cushion a fiberglass tub surround made from polyethylene. Completely water proof.
