"Don't spoil your scenery - Keep those Californians out!" Well, we agree on one thing! ;-) And, you are right, most of Oregon is owned by the feds. Mixed blessings on that. Some of the east coast stuff I miss, but I sure enjoy the scenery and less intense life style here. Sorry to hear that Bertram's is gone, I still remember the giant wooden roller coaster. Also, we are brothers in that only NJ and OR do not allow us to pump our own gas!!

There is always common ground!

There are a lot of pictures and film reel about Bertram's Island. My wife remembers it well since she grew up in the area. The park slid into disrepair in the 70's and finally closed in 1980, I think. It was a sad passing for many people since it had such a long, illustrious history. I grew up in Chicago and we had Riverview Park as a similar place with a rich history (also long gone now). Well, I'm off for the boat tonight to watch fireworks from Halsey Island. They will be going off in front of the yacht club on Bertram's Island. Have a great weekend!

Too Crowded?

I guess it is too crowded when I can't get to where I want to go unencumbered. Not too long ago you could drive down the road and look at the water now it is all condos on one side and tacky, cheesy souvenir shops and real estate offices on the other. The good thing here is there is not much land left for additional development. The Air Force owns a bunch of the land here between Pensacola and Panama City, those are the only areas that are undeveloped this also put height restrictions into play for much of the area. In New Jersey the biggest problem with beach access is after you finally get to the beach finding a spot to lie out on that others are not already lying on. If it ever gets half as crowded as New Jersey I'll be following ol'Dan Boone’s example and moving. The wise prophet Yogi puts our dilemma very succinctly “The place is so crowded nobody goes there anymore”
