florida to bahamas january 2014

Not to hijack the thread, but could you guys suggest some good "practice" trips?
I have a Mac ,26S and when I 1st bought it I was aching to do the Bahamas thing too.
I read about the Conch Cruisers trips. I listened to the advice I was given and gave up on it, but I still have the urge to do that or a similar trip.
Would the barrier islands off of Mississippi/Alabama be a good substitute for a beginner? They are only a few miles offshore but offer exposure to wide open gulf on the outer side and a quick place to duck behind if needed.

Hey guys. Man I have learned alot. Now trip is changed to early july. I found where many boats are crossing together. Also. I have a panama city 40 mile trip planned and october 12th keys trip planned for 10 days. I have learned so much. Special thanks to patrick and chuckbear and many others. My daughter and I are currently in the Bahamas on our second trip. First time we went in to the West End, and this time we bypassed Bimini (just anchored there overnight without going to shore) and cleared in at Great Harbor in the Berries. Both experiences were good. Yes you have to fly a Q flag ( a yellow flag) until you are cleared in, then you fly the Bahamas courtesy flag.

Give me a shout if you need more help. The Bahamas are awesome!
