Florida area sailors take note

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, the City of St. Augustine is holding a meeting to receive public input and ideas for an anchoring ordinance. We strongly encourage all area cruisers to participate in this meeting to ensure a reasonable approach is taken and that St. Augustine remains a boating-friendly area.

The City of St. Augustine is participating as one of five cities in the state’s mooring and anchoring pilot project. As part of this project, the City will be allowed to develop an ordinance to limit nearby anchoring.

St. Augustine has always been one of our favorite cities to visit. They have along history of being very accessible for boaters. I hope it stays that way. If you trailer a boat down, they even have parking lot to park your truck and trailer so you can stay on your boat during your visit.

They've already taken up all the good anchoring spots with moorings so an ordinance will not change things much. I no longer stop at St. Augustine on my trips south and then back north. Used to spend a day or two there. I don't think they'll miss the money I used to spend there. I think boaters add very little to their tourist economy so it will not make much of a difference.

I've anchored there twice, never happy about the holding and stiff currents, so didn't go into town. Last time, we took a slip for two nights and enjoyed visiting the city. Maybe moorings for transients would be a good idea?

According to BoatUS and SSECN the meeting date was changed to May 26 @ 4PM in Alcazar room, at city hall.
