Where did yout get these terms?

Ross: Where did you get these terms? The terms that I am familiar with for a floor is a "sole". This is true whether it be a cabin or cockpit sole. Maybe we are learning something new?

Similar to products in newer boats.

Here is a product that is similar to some of the products that are used in the newer boats. www.tek-dek-international.com/

this from

The wikipidea: known as the sole but is more likely to be called the floor. (A floor is properly, a structural member which ties a frame to the keelson and keel.) I haven't yet found an independent source for ceilings. These are arcane wooden boat terms and not much used today. I'll continue to search for other arcane terms just for fun.

We seem to be on the same page. This is exactly what I've been pondering and I'm anxious to get in contact with the link you provided. The only draw back might be the shipping. The original teak & holy laminate is held down with screws(and teak plugged over the screw heads) and I'm still pondering how best to bond the slats in place. Screws and plugs is obviously the strongest option. But if a 1/2" plywood were laid as a base, could a bead of construction adhesive be applied to the slat base, tapped into place and a standard hardwood flooring staple be popped into it? The expansion problem mentioned earlier would still be a "big" concern? The rest of my woodwork is perfect for a vessel of it's age and even the laminite floor could be reglued in the lifting areas , stripped and refinished as many previous posts described but for the amount of effort, I'm leaning even more so after reading the feedback for the solid teak.

ceiling

a ceiling in a boat is the (usually wooden) interior hull lining inside the boat - what we would call the hull walls. Often horizontal strips of wood with small gaps for air circulation.

Just for fun, I googled for it

Came up with same definition in several places: "the planking attached to the interior structure of a vessel." So it seems that technically the sole would be part of a vessel's ceiling...and so would the overhead. Btw...the skeletal members of a vessel that run fore-aft are stringers...those that run athwartship are floors.

Eversole

Does anybody have a source for -- or have used -- the new composite flooring called Eversole? I saw it in many of the new boats at Strictly Sail in Oakland last Spring. Really sharp -- a hard surface almost like a Corian countertop -- yet very rich looking. The appearance is terrific. No big upkeep problems -- just mop it. Water repellant. Almost too good to be true! I need to refinish the sole of my O'Day 302 and have tried to find it ...with no luck. Anybody know anything about it?

Formica

Hi Take your existing floor sand it down (commercially) to remove a thin layer and have a kitchen builder put a layer of mattte smooth Formica. All new boat builders are doing this on their new boats. Regards
