THE BOAT I JUST PURCHASED IS IN TERRIFIC CONDITION FOR IT'S AGE,IT SURVEYED VERY WELL,AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SPRING WHEN I CAN LEARN TO SAIL! IT DOES NOT,HOWEVER,HAVE THAT BEATIFUL WOOD FLOORING I SAW ON OTHER BOATS I LOOKED AT.CAN I RETRO-FIT WOOD FLOORING OR IS IT NOT WORTH THE EFFORT/COST,ETC. I THOUGHT ABOUT LAYING OUT A TEMPLATE OF CARDBOARD AND HAVING A CARPET BOUND UP BUT I THINK THAT IT WOULD GET MOLDY RATHER QUICKLY. THE PREVIOUS OWNER USED A THROW-RUG,BUT I'M NOT ALTOGETHER HAPPY WITH THAT.IDEA'S OR EXPERIENCES ANYONE....THANKS

Bind the carpet

We have one of those nice wood floors. We also have a dog and tend to spend days on the beach. To keep the floors in decent shape we have opted for carpeting with the bound edges. We have had it in the boat for several years and it still looks good. I would think that if you keep a fan going while the boat is closed up, mold in the carpet would not be a problem.

Carpet is cheap

I used to have a carpet in a Catalina 25. It was easy enough to buy a remnant every couple of years and trim it into shape using the old carpet as a template. Remnants are cheap enough to buy and have bound. Changing them adds a bit of color/design variety down below to "freshen" the look.

outdoor carpet

I have a 1979 '27 and I just went through the same thing. I used outdoor carpet. It comes in many colors and textures and looks like indoor carpet (not the old asto-turf look).Check your local home depot.

consider velcro

After cutting and fitting the carpet you should consider velcro in several places to keep the carpet from sliding and bunching up. See you in Milford Harbor from SERENITY

Use rubber-backed carpet.

Then it will not slide. Our 1979 H37C has a very nice varnished sole and we want to preserve it. We bought a nice remnant from Stone Mountain. Cut it to fit wall-to-wall in the salon while in the boat, but only to within 18" of ladder. Also cut hole under the centerline table for access to bilge. Two small pieces for bottom of ladder and for galley. All bound by Stone Mountain for less than $1. per foot. Comes up easily for winter cleaning which is good because it is a light color(brightens things up).

Refinish

I have refinished my floor. The flooring is not very thick so if the wood is fine you can do this and the cost is about $15.00. If you use power tools you may pay the price, by sanding right thew or burning the wood. The best way is the old hand block sand with the grain. 100 grit and finish with 220 grit. I use poly over the unstained wood, but you may stain. Sand between coats. Looks like new. If your woods bad you might try those new wood flooring you can purchase at home centers. Many types and colors but you will not find teak. As far as carpet, not good. The 27 is known for its small bilge and the water in the bildge and a good wind will show you way. If carpet is a must then make some good looking indoor outdoor. Good luck
