Hi All, I just finished reviewing archives on floorboard refinishing. The consensus is to use polyurethane to redo the cabin sole. I had a friend say he did the same thing and his floor started to flake and peel. Has anyone who refinished their floors have this problem? He said it was because he got water on his floor. I have already refinished the bottoms (wood sealer and 2 coats of Bilgekote). I am about ready to start on the tops with regular Minwax gloss oil-based polyurethane. I also have semigloss available. What are your opinions on my choice of product? Thanks for your help, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh 86 C-36 #560

What's wrong with Varnish

Les: What is wrong with varnish. It will last for years and can take the moisture associated with getting it wet.

spar urethane

Lee I used a Minwax product called helmsman spar urethane execelent proctection from sunlight, rain/moisture and temp changes (according to the mfg) My floorboards came out great and I'm please with the product and after one year they still look as good as the day I put them in. What ever you use make sure it has a uv protector in it to stop sun damage. I used a clear satin finsh but it comes in both gloss and semi gloss also. Good Luck!

Daly's for me

Four coats of Daly's treatment provides plenty of deep protection and bright shine without the buildup of varnish. I've tried everything.

Dito Pete's Minwax Observations

I had a wooden boat once with a ton of brightwork and I varnished the interior of an O'Day 27 and a Hunter Vision 32. After screwing up a lot and trying most things, I have to agree with Pete that Minwax Spar Urethane is about the best I have ever used and mimics Captain's varnish in texture, color and gloss. I'm a convert to the stuff. Just getting ready to do the sole on my 40.5. I did one panel and it has held up well. Rick D.

Minwax is fine

I did my cabin sole about 7 odd years ago after ruining it cleaning up a sugar spill with clorox and steel wool (during an ocean pasage). I removed the old varnish with what is (now) IG Pink and sanded with an orbital sander. I applied several coats of Minwax (from Sears) with a sponge applicator. THen I wet sanded, masked the surrounding areas and used Minwax aerosol spray to get a brushmark free surface. It now needs touching up a bit but has lasted well. It sets fast too!. Jim Willis
