I'm trying to decide between these two brands of 2 blade folding props. The Flexofold costs $1145; the Varifold, $1330. Both get good mention in this month's Sail. The Varifold seems to have a sleeker closed position; otherwise they appear to be similar. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

I really like our FoF. Same speed and engine RPMs as the OEM fixed prop was under power. Under sail it's a huge speed increase, at least a half knot in light winds. One of the compalints about FOF is that the performance in reverse isn't great but I don't mind it. The prop walk is about half of the fixed prop, so enough to be able to use to my advantage without being overpowering. The reverse thrust does seem to be less at idle but going up to about 1200 rpms is plenty of power to stop around a dock.

Alastair, here is a test done several years ago and reported by Yachting Monthly magazine. Good comparative reading.

The most recent Sail magazine has a great article about feathering vs folding props.

I've used Flexofold 2-blade props on three boats I've sailed/driven/owned a lot. I've installed it on my First 260, and it came installed from factory on my First 36.7 and the Pogo 12.50. In every case I've been very happy. Performance has been great in both sailing and motoring, and it ALWAYS unfold when needed, in particular when going from folded to reverse. Recommended.

We used Flexofold 2-blade for about 18 years and it was great but now have a Gori 3-blade, which is amazing. I would offer to sell you the Flexofold but it would be too big for your 32 foot boat. My only complaint about the 2-blade was it was a little slow to get back up to speed in big waves as compared to the 3-blade.

Much thanks everyone for your input. Sounds like Flexifold has the edge (and is $200 cheaper :) ).
I won’t be reversing in any big waves here on Lake Pleasant and the Yachting Monthly article indicates that Varifold is worse in reverse.

New FlexOFold under my desk in a box. It'll be installed Saturday, which isn't much operational input, but casts a vote for the brand.

i had to deal with flexofold to buy their custom prop puller as a spare for my boat . the east coast Flexofold dealer was great to work with, and very knowledgeable. (i was installing a Shaft Shark line cutter , which I also bought from him. )

An interesting note about the FlexOFold. The angle of the prop shaft seems to add to the blades wanting to fold up. I've posted a quick test video at http://meriachee.wordpress.com/ in case you want to see what I mean. Maybe this is old hat to the folding crowd, but it's all new and cool to me. Can't wait for the water!

If I'm not too late to the party, look at Gori too. That's what we have. It works flawlessly
There's a manual on the 2-blade prop in the downloads section

I second the kudos for Gori props... I've only put just a few hours on mine, so admittedly that's a ridiculously small sample, but it seems like an amazing thing so far, and the previous owner sang its praises. I've already noticed way less prop walk in reverse, and the "overdrive" feature on mine (3 blade) increases efficiency quite noticeably... I did read the not-so-glowing numbers on the GORI as described in the yachtingmonthly.com article from the above post in this thread, but it was difficult to tell whether they even used the overdrive feature (read up on it if you are interested) for the tests, or whether they engaged overdrive properly at all... their brief mention of how one engages it at best vague, and more likely just plain wrong. I would have liked to have seen two sets of numbers for the Gori prop, one for "regular" pitch, and an entirely separate set of results for "overdrive" pitch.

We love our Gori 3 blade that we installed last year. Motored about 800 miles last year. The 3 blades make a big difference in a head wind or waves. The boat barely slows down when going into waves.
