flex-o-fold prop vs. maxi prop

I am considering replacing the standard fixed 2 blade prop with either a three bladed flex-o-fold prop or a maxi prop. The difference in cost is considerable with the maxi-prop almost $1000 higher. I have heard that at times the flex-o-fold has caused some vibration and increased prop walk in reverse. Is the maxi worth the difference. Does anyone have any experience.

Max Prop

I've had my Max Prop for almost 12 years on my H 31 and I wouldn't have anything else. Not only the racing aspect of it but the control of the boat especially backing down. I have had people come over to ask me if I have a bow thruster. It maybe expensive but then so is the boat. Good luck on your decision.

Agree Maxi

Had a two blade on a 340 for 3 years. Really does wonders. Would recommend the 3 blade over the 2. Also consider the one that can be adjusted in the water if you don't haul your boat often. Thisway you can really refine your pitch to exactly what you want.

Max Prop

Replaced the original 2 bladed fixed prop with a 3 bladed Max Prop a bit over a year ago. It wasn't the version that you can re-pitch in the water, so it took an additional haul out to get the pitch just right. The benifts: dramatically reduced vibration (baseline was a newly balanced and cleaned 2 bladed fixed prop). Drmatically better backing. Less drag when sailing, but real hard to quantify. I'd do it again.

Max Prop

Steve, We have a 3-blade Max Prop on our '94 40.5 Hunter and love it. The symetrical blades give equal thrust in both forward and reverse. The feathering feature gives higher speeds under sail. The quality is excellent. We get zero vibration in our application. A friend who has a 37.5 has an Auto-prop and claims that it is the better choice if you motor more than sail, but that the Max-Prop is the better choice if you sail more than motor. I tend to agree with him. I have no experience with the flex-o-fold, but wanted to encourage you to get the Max-Prop or the Autoprop. All Good Wishes! Ron s/v Best Revenge

Max prop too

I have a 2 blade max prop on my Legend 37 and love it. Performance under power is at least as good as the 2 blade fixed and backing is unbelievable. Don't have data to validate the performance under sailing, but they changed by PHRF by 18 seconds a mile, and claim the improvement is more than this. Maybe there is a message in that the majority of replies are max prop.

Max Prop in Australia?

Can you get the Max Prop in Australia? We recently bought a Hunter Legend 37 and the standard two blade prop is less than brilliant.
