Does anyone know the size of flax packing used on a Catalina 30 1982 with a 1 inch shaft and the standard stuffing box for the 1982 model? The engine size is the universal 11H.P. I'm looking at trying the graphite flax packing and the boat is in th water still. May do a short haul but want to order packing first.

3/16"

I have a 28 and my manual calls for 3/16" and I found a 34MKII manual on the 34 site and it also has a 1" shaft and takes 3/16". That would be my bet.

3/16 is no doubt correct

We have an '88 Catalina 30. Prop shaft is 1 inch. I expect the packing gland is the same size as yours. Ours uses 3/16 packing. I've only replaced the packing when out of the water but it's an easy job. (Tip: Get some cheap dental picks and a hemostat ... makes digging the old packing out very easy).

easy removal

I have tried the dental tools with mixed results. I found a 3" drywall screw to be very effective in removing the old packing. Simply screw it into the soft packing and pull out with a pair of Channel Lock Pliers. Use the angle of the pliers and rest it on the shaft, and use the pliers as a fulcrum. Try it..

packing

I highly recommend this packing. Eliminates the need to have the lubricating/cooling drip. Mine has been working great for 3 years. Packing nut gets turned about 1 flat a season to keep the water out. http://www.e-marine-inc.com/products/gfopacking/packing.html

Thanks All

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll give the 3" drywall screw a try for the removal of the old packing.

Just How Do You Repack?

I had to turn my packing lock fitting about two full turns to keep the constant stream of water from coming in (the boat is in the water)yesterday. Now that I am getting a pretty good picture of how to remove the packing, what is the process for re-packing? Do you measure for one complete drive shaft rotations worth and use the compression fitting to pack it in, then go with another piece? How much packing do you use? Can you do it with the boat in the water? That is will the flow of water far exceed the applicaiton of the first packing piece? Any info. is always appreciated. Bob '88 Cat 30
