I'm a first time sailboat owner and just bought a 1971 V24. The owner didn't have the winch handle that goes with it. I'm sure I could make one but would really like to find an original. The winches on the ones that take a flat bar that load into the top side into a slot. Attached is an sample picture of what I'm needing. Also any advice on the best sheets to replace existing weathered (but usable) sheets would be a great help. Thanks!!
rather than spending time and resources locating an ancient winch handle, look for a salvage yard that has a set of older small boat winches that you can probably get for the price of that winch handle you are currently seeking.... your search will probably take less time for the winches than for the antique handle, and you will be much happier with a modern style winch that the handle installs and removes from quickly.
as for sheets, a yacht type double braid such as 5/16" sta-set... 3/8" doesnt run thru the blocks as well and is absolutely unnecessary for that boat.
if the sheets you currently have are a yacht braid, and in decent shape, but a bit stiff, remove them from the boat and put them in a laundry bag.... and wash them on a normal cycle. they will be as supple as a new line...
the line is expensive, so it would be my suggestion you get the most from what you have before spending the money on line.... maybe on some winches???
