Flange removal from shaft

I need to replace the dripless packing on my Beneteau 36cc. Obviously I must remove the flange from the shaft to do this. Most flanges that I've worked with have a simple set screw that must be loosened which releases the shaft. I don't see one. How do you get the thing off?

Is this a traditional stuffing box?

You don't have to remove the coupling to repack a traditional stuffing box if there's enough room between the coupling and box to work. If your removing the whole box, then of course you do. If there's no set screws, your shaft may be the double tapered kind that has a nut inside the coupling to hold it on. Separate the coupling halves and remove the nut, the shaft should then come out.

I assume the 36cc is not different from the 361. Once you remove the four bolts to disconnect the flange from the gear box you will see a screw in the middle of the flange. There can be a cover though, so make sure you remove it (with a thin screwdriver or something; sometimes it's not so easy to grab it and remove it). Undo the screw and then remove the flange from the shaft. Please note that there's a key (I hope it's called like this) holding the flange on the shaft. Very simiar to the way the propeller is held in place on the other side of the shaft (different key sizes though). If you have problem removing the flange from the key try putting back that central screw a little bit and connect again the shaft back to the gear box with the four bolts slowly slowly. At some point it will "push" the shaft out of the flange.

I have replaced a shaft seal on a B323, in that case, once the coupling was separated, inside the coupling is a nut that had to be removed. That side of the coupling is fitted onto a taper and took a considerable amount of effort to remove it. I used a gear puller then hit the coupling with a large copper headed hammer to "shock" the coupling. Once that was removed the rest was simple, be sure to follow the installation instructions carefully so as not to damage the lip seal. Good luck
