First some background: My new H356 has a stainless steel flagstaff holder mounted on the stern rail. It has a 1" inside diameter. Flag etiquette calls for a flag's horizontal length to be 1" for each foot of boat length. In the case of the 356, that translates to a 36"x24" flag, which is a very common size that is readily available. Flag etiquette also calls for a flagstaff to measure twice the length of the flag's vertical length, which in this case would be 48". Now the question: I cannot find any source for a flagstaff that measures 48" long with a 1" diameter. All of the 48" flagstaffs seem to be 1-1/4 inches in diameter. I Can't Help With The Flag

In all my years of "checking out" boats at shows, that is the first one that has, actually, stopped both my first mate and me in our tracks. Now, the key is to try to find one in our area for a "test sail". Seems all the dealers have sold any that they had, and/or have orders for them on a "wait list". Maybe when they get caught up (if that ever happens) one of them will put a 356 in the water for demos. Again, congrats!!!

OK, here is an easy way out. Go to Home Depot, or whatever,and buy a 1" Dowel to the length you want. Then you buy a wood curtain rod end,"finial". Cut the dowel to length, screw the finial on, stain to suit your taste, spray varnish and you have what you need for about 10 dollars or less. Teak is not a requirement only a function of brainwashing.

You other option is to change out the staffholder. You may need to patch a couple of the holes with some Marinetex (ouch, holes in a brand new boat). Use the first option. Give me a break Jack, he just spent $130k on a new boat and is going to worry about the price of a piece of mahogany or teak?

May Look Okay As-Is?
The "rule of thumb" for the staff height has to be related to the appearance. If your staff is mounted on the rail then it's already "up", off the deck, by about a foot; therefore, if your existing staff is about 3-feet then the appearance would be "about right".

My Hunter 380 had the same problem
My 380 came with a one inch flag holder as well. However, since the boat had so little teak topsides, I bought a piece of stainless steel 1 inch tubing, about fifty to sixty inches long and had the stainless guy weld two loops on it, one at the top and one below where the flag would end. I liked having the extra length as it allowed the flag to flow out from the stern of the boat and be out of the way when I was getting down to the dinghy... it was cheaper than a wood staff and we got comments on how well it looked. Just an idea.

They have great stuff and prices, but should warn you the freight costs are unfriendly, esp if you need this quickly. (or have a friend who trips to Bangkok on occasion and can handcarry for you...) maybe just as well to get the 1-1/4" version from Defender or wherever and then handsaw an 1/8" groove at the butt end of the mount and chisel/whittle the excess off to be 1" dia. brian

Pete, Flagtaffs are in quite vulnerable positions when other folk are messing with mooring lines and a four foot long one would have enormous leverage on only a 1" diameter spigot. I would imagine it would easily break and I recommend you use a stock 3' staff - or a smaller ensign. Lastly, don't make it a snug fit else when it gets wet it seizes in the holder - as I found to my dismay. Regards,
