Does anyone have or can anyone explain how they fixed their flag halyards? I'm completely green to sailing, sorry if this is a dumb question. I don't want to attach one and then it be in the way of everything. Thanks.

I used the spring clips on my backstay. It works well. Just make sure you get the one for halyards. I still ended up bending the clip to better grip the stay.

I have one gripe about flags. Bought my Canada flag to fly on my boat and found a big tag which says made in China. Is there anything left made in North America anymore.

West Marine sells a kit for the spreader to the starboard stay. $59.00 it comes with everything you need.

I've cable tied a 1" block to the outer end of a spreader, run a light line through it (so I'm not tempted to hang something heavy on it) down to a shroud mounted cleat, below boom level to clear the sail. I think I will change the cleat for, or add, a block so the line does'nt fly away when I let it go. I then whipped one end of the line to the other, 6" from the end. The other end is then whipped to the line leaving a 'hole' in, the now continuous loop, through which, you can put the toggle of the flag support rope. Tie the other end off below-job done! You could even whip a loop of bungy cord to the line for the botton flag fixing to keep the edge stretched.

My son's boy scout uniform and my daughters karate uniform have American flag patches with a sticker that said made in china. How poetic.

I think you could attache a very inexpensive pulley to your spreader using a zip tie. I have done something similar. I have a small pulley attached to my bow chain plate and another to my pow pulpit to operate a down haul for my jib. The pulley attached to the bow pulpit is one of these (see pic) and it is attached using a zip strip (see pic). The pulley does not have to be a high quality pulley since it will not carry any load. And the zip strip will be enough to hold it (heck use two) for the same reason... or attache the pulley to the spreader with a hose clamp if you want it to be a stronger attachment.

This type of pulley is less than $2 on line or about $2.50 at Lowes and Tractor Supply. For less than $5 and 5 minutes you can have this all set up.

Then when you discover that you almost never fly a flag anyway, you won't have spent any real money or time on it... :poke:

Annin Flagmakers is "the oldest and largest maker of flags in the United States since 1847" out of Roseland, New Jersey. They made the flag for Lincoln's inauguration and the one that draped his casket. http://www.annin.com/

Yes, Fortune Cookies.
Just one of those amazingly useless facts I know, the fortune cookie was invented in Los Angeles, CA. around 1920 as well as Chowmein.
