I am heading to the Keys with my family June 9-18. We will be in the Islamorada area for the early part of the week, and Key West for the end of the week. My 14 year old daughter wants to try board sailing, and I would like an afternoon or evening of sailing - not drunk tourist cruise. Anybody have suggestions for me for both agendas? Thanks!

Just Back from Key West

I just got back from a trip to The Dry Torugas and Key West on my 306 Hunter. I stayed at Conch Harbor Marina and right as you go in the main dock on the left side was a private sail boat that took people out. I talked to two women who charted it for a afternoon and they said it was a great time. It was a nice looking sailboat over 40 ft but I don't know the price. Maybe if you called the marina you could get some info. Hope this helps. Jim

Plenty to Do Hello Jim

I was in key west last year and there was plenty of choices of sailing sun set trips or sailing your self,I would do a internet search. How did the boat do on the trip,I have the 290 and will be moving to port charlotte next year,I am looking forward to doing similar trips

FL keys are mangroves; the few beaches

are man made. Don't know about sailboarding but the sailing is great. There are many options for sail charters. Look at any of the marinas as a good number of sailors will charter their boats.

Hi Nick

It was A great time, my 306 handled very well. On the way over to the Dry Tortugas the seas were pretty flat but on the way back from Key West it started out at 5 to 7 ft seas and got calmer all day. That night they were calling for 2 ft seas and 5 mile winds but the wind came up to 30 mph and it got pretty rough, I don,t know how big the seas were but by morning it had calmed. we must have sailed half and motored half the time so it was a good trip. You are going to love charlottes harbor. We will go out and not hardly see another boat if the wind kicks up. Lots of places to explore. I have been there four years and just love it. I wish my wife would move down permantly but I guess 5 months a year isn,t bad. Good Luck and Happy Sailing, see out on the bay. Jim

Try this

Small resort called Best of Both Worlds is at Mile 75, near Ismoralda. They have several 22- and 25-foot boats for use by the guests. Perhaps they will let you rent one for a daysail. Nice folks.

Treasure Harbor Marine

Try this place on Islamorada. They have several size sailboats available for day or week charter. Easy location to access Hawk Channel. Low key, quiet place. You'll love it. If you haven't found a place to stay yet, at the end of the short road that goes to Treasure Harbor Marine there is a great old fashioned Keys resort. One of the nicest settings I've seen in the Keys.

One more thought

Maybe half a mile west of Treasure Harbor is a resort called Holiday Isle. One of the few beachs in the Keys, and they rent all sorts of water toys - PWC's, etc. They also have some great beach bars as well. About half way between Islamorada and Key West is Bahia Honda State park. It has a great beach and they also rent water stuff. This is a great spot to take a half day snorkel trip to the reefs. The snorkeling is very easy and well worth the trip.

Bahia Honda

has one of the best beaches I've seen...there is a rail road bridge that has had a gap cut in it and you can sail right through into a harbour to anchor or all the way in to the state park docks.

sailboarding?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm having a hard time finding someone who offers sailboarding lessons for my teenager. floridakeyswindsurfing.com looks good on the web, but I've been emailing them, and they no longer offer lessons unless you're staying at one of a handful of resorts. They say all the other resorts are 'going private' and evidently limiting beach access?? Anybody have any suggestions for where to get windsurfing lessons?
