Fixing up a 20' Oday...questions

I just bought a older 20' Oday (previously owned a Oday Mariner). It needs a good bit cleaning up, but otherwise is in pretty good shape. The mainsail needs to be replaced and I have looked on the internet for used/new sails. But I mostly get lists of sails that would need to be modified. So how do I get a sail for the 20' Oday??? The jib sail is okay, but stained. Also, I'm interested in replacing the rudder with a kick up rudder (which works much better for shallow waters of Florida). Other questions....I haven't had it in the water yet, so I am not sure I will like the way the swing keel works ..just pulling it up and down with a rope. I remember the mariner had a wheel/cable system of sorts. How do you replace the rope on the swing keel for the 20? Can some sort of wheel or pulley be installed? When I first got the Oday, it had been sitting in someone's yard for quite a few years and at some point it must have been nose down on the trailer. Alot of water, and leaves got in the cabin, probably overflowed from the cockpit. Yikes! It took a lot of pumping and cleaning to remove the sludge. I got all of the water out except for a little bit under the floor that you can see through the hole. I can't tell how large the compartment under the floor is, but have tipped the boat to get to most of the water. Is there anything else I need to do to be sure I have ALL the water out? Help with any of these questions will be greatly appreciated. Hoping to get this boat afloat SOON. Thanks, Kathryn

Stuff -

Kathryn - Call the folks at our chandlery for a sail quote. They have Doyle products, great sails, at really competitive prices. If you're looking for used call Bacon and Associates in Anapolis, they have lots. I don't know if there is a lifting rudder available for that boat. Try hitting the Foss Foam Rudders link on the top of the page. If anyone can help you with a retrofit rudder it may well be them. Someone else is going to have to chime in with the solution to the replacement centerboard pennant, but I'm sure they will. Not much you can do for a perfectly dry bilge. Even the luckiest of us get some water in there some times. You might have good luck with a wet-vac, but its going to come back. If it doesn't consider yourself _very_ lucky. Oday 20 interior

Kathy you might try sail wharehouse for new sails 1-800-495-7245 for starters or bacon assc. I currently have a used main sail if at all intrested and some other related gear. A new main should run about 400.00 dollars as for the swing keel the best way to replace the line is when the boat is in the travel lift pit drop the keel with extra line and fish it through Also are you going to use the main sheet setup attached the rear stay do you have another solution if so let me now best regards Willem

Response to Willem about Oday 20 fix up

Hi Willem, Thanks for the info. I have gotten a list of sails from Bacon, but haven't quite figured out where to go from here. I have never measured or ordered a sail before...so I am learning a lot. I may be interested in your used main. What kind of condition is it in and how much $$$? Give me a description. I don't have access to a lift to get to the keel..so I will have to work on that. Do you have an Oday 20? I have noticed that they aren't always listed on the Oday list. Any other gear related to the Oday 20 that you have....I might be interested. thanks so much for your response, Kathryn

Interested in mainsail for Oday 20

Willem, I would be very interested in the mainsail. Are you giving it away? I would be happy to pay something if it is in good shape...and will certainly pay for mailing it. I live in Florida. Address is : Kathryn Gordon, 12002 NE 203 Ter., Earleton, Fla. 32631 or P.O. Box 515, Earleton, Fla. 32631. As soon as I get my boat in the water, I will swim under and replace the rope for the centerboard. I thought that might be a good solution. Did your Oday need a lot of work? My boat is coming along, but not quite ready to launch. I hope to get it sailing in the next month. Thanks, Kathryn

To Mike of Wilmington

Hi Mike, I'm really looking forward to getting this boat in the water...getting closer bit by bit. So about this drain-plug?? Where is that? I got most of the water out with a wet vac and sponge, but there is still some in that compartment where the 3" hole is...accesible in the cabin floor. I would love to know there is an easier way to drain the bilge. Please send me the address and phone # of the place in Mass. where parts can be ordered. Kathryn

Centerboard

My centerboard line is very warn and I appreciate the info on swimming under and feed the new line up. How exactly does the line attach to the board so I can be prepared. Also, when docking and sleeping on the boat the centerboard bangs loudly. Any suggestions. Scott

O'Day 20 Fix-up/centerboard - Scott

Not having boat stands I raised my 20' off the trailer using a hydraulic jack, cinder blocks and 4X4s to bottom paint and inspect the centerboard line. Raise the boat and trailer onto cinder blocks, establish your cinder block and 4x4 supports under the boat, lower trailer, remove trailer. With the board down you will see an opening through the end of the board where the line as attached. The line fits through a hole perpendicular to the opening near the end of the board and then knotted. For CB noise, I have heard of wedging a large sponge up into the top of the CB slot but haven't had a need to try it or know if the sponge stays. Let us know how you make out. Good luck.

Bilge pump out

Kathy, Get a Beckson Thirsty Mate Hand Pump. About $15 at Boater's World or what have you. Its a PVC tube with a hand plunger. It looks like a bicycle pump with a hose out the top. They fit nicely into the hole in the cabin floor and have a short hose that will pump the water into the cockpit and out the self bailer hole.
