I have read past archives on releasing a stuck center board on an Oday 23. Well, I bought a 3/16" steel rod to push it down, but, I had trouble pushing it down because of the line going down to the centerboard from the step. Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Stuck C/B

Eric - Be careful with the rod because at least one person on the site has damaged their board with agressive poking. Search the archives for stuck boards, there have been tons of threads on it with some good ideas. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Get rid of the grommet

The pennent line for the centerboard on my 23 comes out into the cockpit on the bridge deck step. To make a tight fit around the line, the hole is fitted with a white plastic grommet that surrounds the line. The first time I tried to insert a steel rod through this hole to free my stuck centerboard, I couldn't get it to fit into the hole past the line. However, once I removed the grommet, I found the actual hole and passageway to be more than wide enough to accomodate the line and the rod. The grommet on my boat is attached with one or two screws, and comes off quite easily. I would also echo Justin's caveat to be careful. You might want to add a "cushion" of sorts made of wadded up tape or some type of material at the end of the rod so that you don't have a 3/16 inch spear poking a hole in your centerboard. Once you take the grommet off, you will be able to see how big a cushion the hole will handle. I might add that I had to hammer on the end of the rod to get my centerboard free; I did not use a cushion, and there was no damage to my centerboard.

Thanks Mike!

Once I removed the grommet, I was able to fit the steel rod down. I am going to get a larger diameter rod now, cusion it, and use a hammer. Hopefully this will work!

unsitcking the CB,,, another view..

Hey, I just went through this CB unsticking on mey oday 23. I found that the CB gets stuck on one side. It seems to get glued to the side of th eboot it's in. I swam under with a mask and pried the sticky side loose with a cold chisel. Finally I heard a "crack'" and then I could pry the CB down from the tip end. I don't like the idea of poking the pokse through and hammering because it seems mor likely to damage. Breaking the seal between the sides seems the safer way to go to me, but it does require a little dive. But hey, It's summertimei! Good Luck!!!

In Process Now

I have a 71 Oday 23' and CB is stuck as well. Have been poking with the rod and so far no luck. Have also been prying underneath from side to side. Again no luck to date. Going to attempt to try the dive thing and see if it will free up as well. Have read that the pin may be binding up and may have to be replaced, which I intend to do very soon. In the mean time I have been enjoying the feel of a tricky helm. No doubt it is a challenge. Will keep all of you posted on the results. Thanks for reading and I would be interested in other options as well.

oday stuck centerboards

CB gets stuck because of marine growth.I drilled a hole in cb about 3" from bottom and inserted a short piece of ss threaded rod with sealant, washers, lockwashers, and hex nuts. The weight of th cb does not allow it to stick.

how did you fix it

we have a 23 poptop, this year the cb was stuck and and my husband used a rod down the cable access. He was finally able to free up the centerboard but several days later found the boat was leaking(alot)we are not sure where it is coming from. the entry about the hose from the bilge is interesting. how did you find it and how did you fix it? my husband is planning on divin to check out the hull.

With help from the boat yard

I hauled the boat out, and while on straps, one of the boat yard staff helped me. I removed the cusions in the cabin, closest to the stern, and from there we could access the hose which connects the tubes (one goes up to cockpit, one goes down to c-board). The hose is removed by unscrewing the hose clamps. It is about 5 or 6 inches long- we just matched it with a new piece from the boat parts store, and re-installed it with the clamps. You will need to snake the line back up through the top tube. Note: I will NEVER use the "metal rod" method again. It turned out that I just had muck stuck in the c-board fitting- since then, I have not had a problem. Hope this helps!
