mast recently fell down - another story!! two forward of four staunchions bent at deck, want to straighten or put new staunchions on. each with flat base with three screws into deck. can the screws be taken out and re-applied without complications - are the nuts under the outer surface of the deck fixed or will they just 'float' into the 'mists' of the double skin of the deck. any help re-applying these staunchions re-conditioned or new will be appreciated.

e.j. I have a 1990 H-27 and recently removed the stantions and rebeaded them with sealant. The screws backed out and went back in and tightened and the nuts did not come off or slip. Put them right back on with a cordless drill no problem. With the inside lip hanging down it would really be exciting if they did come off, I was worried about that also when I started. The bow pulpit and stern pulpit is different, nuts come off. Had to use a long extension with a universal joint and deep socket to hold the nut on stern pulpit. I pulled the fiberglass lip inside down and put a flashlight between it and the hull to hold it open while I removed and replaced the nut. jim

Looking for new stanchions

for my 1989 26.5 but have not been able to locate. I have resorted to redoing the welds on the supports but am not happy with my results and don't feel they will last. I've seen a lot of bent stanchions on sister boats and would not want to test my weight on them in an emergency. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a resource for original type stanchions (new or good condition used) that will fit the existing holes. Glenn Windwisp

new stanchoins

Anytime you bend stainless steel stanchions way out of shape, I would just throw them away and replace with new. They should be available. Contact Phil Herring through the HOW chandlrey and if he cannot get them for you, then get back on the forum and I will steer you in the direction. Most of the stanchions are held in place with screws that go in and are secured to an aluminum plate that is encapsulated into the glass. They have been drillen and tapped. Make sure all caulking is removed before inserting the screws back in. If the retaining holes are stripped which sometimes they are, then go to the next size bolt but you will need to tap the hole for that larger bolt. Merry Christmas Crazy Dave Condon

Available on the HOW site.

EJ: You can buy what you need here on the HOW site. It may be best to send one of the units to their supplier so they can duplicate what you have. We have been using butyl tape to seal the stanchions and it works very well. The big advantage of butyl tape is that you do not have to worry about too much, too little and making a mess. Unlink caulking. You really do not want to use 5200 for this process. No matter what anyone tells you if you cannot soften the 5200 and you try removing your stanchion you WILL remove the gelcoat with the hardware.
