My fixed ports in our H34 (1983) are in sad shape. I would like to replace the glass ( plastic) by removing and cleaning up and then refitting the old frames with new Plastic- either acrylic or Lexan- my inclination is to Lexan or like product. There are two on each side- the rectangle one (aft) and the pointy one forward of that. I have the metal frames.

My questions are:

Has anyone done this and what problems did you encounter?
What do I find when I start to take the windows apart ( a step by step description would be REALLY helpful here.
It appears there is a type of weatherstrip made of rubber here. I will post a picture in a second posting of the outside where it can be better seen. Is this the same rubber substance I can see on the inside? Any ideas as to where I can get new equivalent?
I think I can manage the cutting etc of the plastic ok- it is more the frame stuff I am trying to get a handle on
Thanks in advance

Richard, I replaced mine this year

with new windows made to fit (perfectly, as it turned out) by Mark Plastics in Corona, CA. Mark talked me into tempered glass instead of Lexan, and I'm glad he did. You at least have decent aluminum frames -- my 85 had the tacky plastic frames. But if you're interested, Mark's phone is (951) 735-7705.

I'd take a picture, but Hanna is making it pretty damp and dark here on the Chesapeake right this minute. And my windows aren't leaking! Finally!

Mark Plastics are good replacements

Richard,

After exploring options for restoring the aluminum framed fixed ports on my 1983 H34 I decided to spend the $500 or so on the complete set of Mark Plastics ports. The extruded rubber piece your looking for does not likely exist (I couldn't find it) and without it your hosed for a quality refurbishment. The Mark ports have been installed for about 8 years now and are starting to craze (as any lexan does over time). Wish I had the option of glass when I purchased mine. I'll go back to Mark for replacements some day.

Another option.

Richard:

You may also want to check out Bomon. They can make replacement fixed ports for your boat too.

Bomon has alum frames, Mark Plastics has plastic (obviously).

Check them both out and you can make an informed decision.
