About once a week I take a look at Craigs List and eBay hoping to find a decent Mac 26S or 26D within a 6 hour drive of my house. There are two 26S sailboats on the west coast and three other Mac Models on eBay right now. I constantly read posts about how badly the macs are made but... they sure do seem to hold up and 40 years later they are still sailing.

I say bang for the buck ......

If price per foot and ease of launching are top priorities...Macs are hard to beat!

There is a trailer which is going to need new tires, wiring and lights to make it road worthy.
8 HP Evinrude OB engine of similar vintage likely needs a good tune up.
My friend is a civilian mariner for the Navy working for the MSC so is often away for months at a time. As such, he hasn't been able to use the boat much in several years. He has had the pleasure of paying a local yacht club membership and storage fees during that time. This is why I say I think that they would accept an offer in the range I specified. It should be worth it to them to stop the financial bleeding of paying for a boat you are not using.
I have sailed on this boat and spent the night on her. We took her some 50 nm on the Atlantic ocean from Fire Island Inlet to NYC on our delivery trip.
I can tell you more if you are interested.

That last link is actually a Mac 25. Probably the owner was confused. You can tell from the rounded windows.

And it looks like they did something funny with the rudder too.

Also, look at the seats they installed inside the cabin. Do you think those would be more comfortable?

Chris there aren't any stern pictures in that link? Or rudder pictures???
Never mind. I found it. Good idea for the fuel tank. How high does the rudder kick up on a 26S? Would that box be in the way?
I know my rudder comes way up so it wouldn't work for the 26D even if it was built out a bit.
I have seen some rudders sitting horizontally on the water and am reminded of a guy at our club that broke his tiller handle because his rudder let go from the down position and he tried to tack. I think he may have reefed on it not noticing the ruder was sticking out the back.
Here is a picture of my boat at dock. I always lift the rudder and motor out of the water.

Ours comes up parallel to the water ....

.... surface and on anchor it is up there and the outboard is out. Also the CB is up on anchor. I don't like things sticking down when we are swinging around and I don't know what is down there.

The way the up-haul line is rigged would make it very hard to try and lift out of the water and I'm not sure if the bracket would allow it anyway on the S. If the rudder kicks up like this while sailing and you don't pull it down there is a tremendous force on things like you mentioned,

Not sure what you mean? Looks like the rudder on our S unless I'm missing something. The D's are external, is that what you are referring too?

Sum
Yep! I thought the only difference between the S & D was the centerboard vs. dagger board.

I guess that fuel mod opens some room in the cockpit. But I wouldn't want to sail in rough water with that set up. Looks like a wave could roll over the top of your fuel tank very easily. Maybe if you fitted it with a top????

There's one big difference I see that people don't usually comment on. That is the high sides of the cockpit on the S vs the lower sides with the SS railing on the D.
Actually one of the deciding reasons I got the D. And this from a guy that was thinking the S with the swing keel would be best in case I bottom out.
Nope, style and ergonomics won out. I just like the look and feel of the D.

I had toyed with a fuel-tank mod like that for a long time...still thinking about how to solve that issue (where to put the fuel tank), but that's another thread.
I like the clean look of the stern rails, but I can see how you'd have to make a mod or two in order to make it easier to climb aboard...it would be tough to get to the top and have to swing your leg over (for the Admiral).
Looks like a clean boat otherwise...not sure I like that plastic chair arrangement downstairs...
