This is the hard part of re-doing waste tank systems.....finding vendors.

What company makes waste tank screened vent line fittings either thru deck or thru hull?

Not the type of thru-hull you want on a waste tank vent

Screens corrode and become clogged with with dust and pollen...they cause more problems than they solve. The odds that an insect will get into the vent line and block it are slim...but even if one does, it's a problem easily solved with a hose if you have an open bulkhead thru-hull instead of a "vent" thru-hull.

Screens in vent thru-hulls are only there because "vent" thru-hulls are "one size fits all--gas, diesel, water and waste...the screen is a spark arrestor when the thru-hull is used on a gas tank vent...it's not needed in waste tank vents.

A bunch of the thru-hulls shown on this page have screens, some even removable: http://www.thefind.com/query.php?query=vent+thru+hulls But I wouldn't use a single one of 'em on a waste tank vent 'cuz none of 'em allow enough exchange of air to keep the tank aerobic. . What you want is on this page: http://www.defender.com/productsearchresult.jsp #2 or 6 or 9...

Strange...

I dunno why it didn't work, but if you go to the defender.com home page and a search "thru-hull fittings," it'll give you 84 of 'em to choose from. Any plastic EXCEPT nylon is acceptable.

It's ok to use nylon entirely inside the boat--for instance, tank fittings--one end in the tank, the other inside a hose...but not in any "outdoor" application because it isn't UV resistant. In a very short time it becomes brittle and easily cracked...can even turn to a "powder" that can be scraped off with your fingernail.

Suggestions: mount the macerator lower than the tank bottom; rotate 90 degrees to starboard so it always has a flooded suction. Put a full port PVC ball valve between the tank and the tee on the bottom so you can change/work on the macerator pump when it fails.

Metal Thru-hull for vent?

Could you use a stainless steel thru-hull for the vent (just to match others) or is there some sort of a corrosion issue?

Vents

FWIW our 1991 model Hunter has the standard SS clam shell type through hull vent with built-in SS screen for the holding tank. We purchased the boat in 2002 and once I cleared the plugged tank vent line left over from the PO and followed Peggie's pump out maintenance procedure the system has operated trouble free ever since. I chose not to remove the screen. I'll defer to Peggie whether you should remove the screen.

How is it working?

Paul,

I just bought a 2001 Catalina 310 and want to improve the holding tank venting. Thanks so much for posting your designs and especially the pics of the completed fix. A couple of quick questions:

1. Does your new vent line work well / are you happy with it?
2. You and Peggie had an offline conversation about your original design where you were sticking with the original position of the through-hull. What was wrong with that approach - too long - too vertical?
3. Anything tricky about putting in the new-through hull? How about the new fitting on the holding tank?

Thanks,
Mike Ryan
