Hi Peggy. I am in the process of replacing the metal holding tank on my boat with a custom plastic one. The tank builder said that the fittings to attach th waste hoses to screw into the new tank. However, they are not supplied with the tank ,and should be purchased at any plumbing supply or hardware store. I was just wondering if there ar special marine grade fitting made for this or if any plumbing fitting will do?

Im sure Peggy will chime in here on the "whys" of using marine grade parts. However, from her recommendation about two years ago, I replaced my holding tank also. Bought the fittings here. Quality and very easy to install. Easy! You just need the holesaw. They specialize in vacuflush, which I have, but holding tanks fittings for connecting your hoses are universal.

Good luck

Is there such a thing as "marine grade" fittings for a holding tank?
When I replaced my aluminum with a plastic tank, I used the ubiquitous hardware store bought PVC fittings and used the appropriate sealant/adhesive - so far, so good...

I probably worded that poorly Don. I was thinking along the lines of brass vs bronze, gate valves vs ball valves, marine stainless vs home depot stainless, tinned wire vs non tinned. No intent to label "marine grade". Just a figure of speech.

Cheers

And also, even though I mentioned Peggy's name in my post. I in no way meant to imply this is what she said or would say. She just helped me out.. more than once. :)

Tank should come with female threaded fittings installed

So you won't need a hole saw...all you'll need to buy are the male thread-barb plastic --PVC or Marelon--hose fittings...and yes, both straight and 90s are available from just every marine store. No, there is no such thing as "marine grade" plastic plumbing fittings...though some sold at hardware stores have walls that are too thin to be suitable for use on a boat.

Inlet and outlet should be 1.5". Avoid gray PVC 1.5" because nominal 1.5 x 1.5 is actually 1.5 OD at the threaded end, but 1.5 ID at the barbed end...making 'em 1 5/8 barbed, impossible to get a hose onto. Gray PVC is ok for all other sizes, though.

Hopefully you specified a 1" vent fitting...if not, you'll need a 5/8" thread-barb tank fitting.

Do NOT use ANY sealant on the threaded end, only Teflon tape...nor any sealant whatever on the barb end. Warm the hose a little--do not overheat!--and use a little dishwashing liquid or K-Y as a lubricant...double clamp all connections, with screws 180 degrees apart...or at least 90 degrees if access makes 180 impossible.

Never heat a hose to make it bend tighter than it wants to bend willingly...break it and insert an inline radius fitting. And use 45s or 90s at the tank or thru-hull if the hose has be at an angle...don't just pull it, 'cuz that'll cause a fitting to leak.

And finally, don't overtighten the fittings in the tank. Tank fittings are NPT standard, which is slightly tapered (too slightly to see in a fitting that short)...over-tightening will crack the female collar, if not immediately, in time. Just one turn past hand tight, plus enough to aim an elbow where it needs to go is as tight as they should ever be.

When I ordered my tank, I specifically did not have them place any fittings. That way I was able to place the tank and then decide where I wanted to run the lines to the tank. I liked the sealand fitting because it allowed me to drill the holes and then install. Worked out pretty well. Was almost finished here. Just a few more clamps, strap it down and....

Hunter 375 Holding Tank Replacement thinking of doing it on a 1993 model.

Remove the access panel in the rear cabin. Other access panel in rear starboard cocpit locker beneath batteries. Take screws out of tank hold-down legs. Cut fittings off flush with tank with saws all. cut legs off tank. With some jiggling it just fits through the rear cabin access opening.
To install new tank I had to remove hose from manual bilge pump,so the tank legs would clear. You might a well do it to begin with then you don't have to saw legs off old tank.
It takes 2 people, one above in the cockpit hanging through the locker and one below to jiggle the old tank out and new one in.
I order an exact replacement tank that I had made by www.threemplastics.com. It was cheaper than others I priced elswhere.
I used the tank all last season without problems. If I can be of any further please to not hesitate to contact me.
