I'm installing a new holding tank, using a 1" vent line. . . question - does anyone make a "clamshell" fitting with a 1" hose barb, or am I stuck using a standard 1" thru-hull? thanks for any input/advice. . .

I would not use a clamshell for a holding tank. It is much easier to back flush it if you use a standard thru hull fitting.

I like to flush the vent after each pump out.

1" vent

I guess I thought with a 1" vent, the chance of getting unintentional backflush, i. e. rain, wave, etc. would be too high, and when I got the boat - 81' 33 - it had a "clamshell" type fitting on the vent. . .

Ditto Steve. Also, if the vent hose goes uphill from the thruhull before getting to the tank the rain will not go into the tank. Waves not such a big concern, I put in a 1.25 "standard" mushroom thruhull for my vent. No problems.
