Fitting a log paddle wheel

Hi All,

The next thing on my list is fitting a paddle wheel for the Nasa log. Does anyone have any views on where to drill the hole for the paddle wheel? It clearly needs to be sufficiently close in to the centreline to ensure it stays in the water when the boat is heeled, but are there there particular positions to avoid? Any preference for port or starboard? I imagine it will come up underneath one or 't other of the berths in the saloon.

On my boat it was fitted on the side of the keel. Then when you pull it out for cleaning, the water goes into the bilge instead of the cabin sole.

That's brilliant ... and it'll never see the sunshine when heeled over!
I wish I'd thought of that. Mine is on the port side, just in front of the main cabin bulhead that's under the mast. It's as close to the center as possible, but occasionaly comes out of the water when healed way over, and only gets cleaned when I beach the boat.

Thanks All,

I imagine it has to be a compromise between accuracy and accessibility. Putting just forward of the main cabin bulkhead to port would put it in the hanging locker, which would be (relatively) easy to access.

The downsides to that location is the hull is considerably thicker at the spine, and is also 'V' shaped ... not a good place for a 2" hole.
My vote is still for the bilge :)

While repairing blisters, I discovered a 2" hole from the bildge through the
keel that had been previously glassed over. I have been wondering since I
found it what the heck itcould have been for. Know I know. She lacks a log
at present, but will have one and I will install it in the bilge/keel.

Thanks guys

Cindy:
Can you tell us more about the blisters? This seems a rare occurance in Vegas.

Mine is in the space just behind the water tank, just to port of the centerline. It works well there but some owners have adapted that space to hold chain, which seems a better use. I want to move it eventually and perhaps place it in the next locker back, on port, just before the hanging locker. It would need a better access hatch, through the top of the V-berth. Because I am leery of the device, or the hole it occupies, I have thought it would be possible to modify that locker with so that should the knotmeter fail the leak would be contained within the locker. It seems that other locations for the device are awkward to access or are wasteful of space that could be put to better use.

A question related to this . . . The bulkheads and cabinetry are bolted to the tabbing on the hull. Is there any reason that the bolts could not be reinforced by with cloth and resin? Probably by running glass tape from the bulkhead to the hull and bolting through the tape, rather than running the tape over the bolts which might cause corrosion ( stainless and moisture in an airless environment)?
