We used to attach a close pin to a bungy cord and clip it to the rigging. You can hear the clothes pin "snap" when you get a hit. Chuck
Last time out I trolled Oneida Lake hoping for one of her world-class wide-mouth bass to bite. Instead I snagged lots of weeds and lots a few lures. Next time I'll slow down a little.
I have not done much Bass fishing but I don't recall anyone trolling to catch them. Chuck

As for rods, we catch more at anchor than sailing. Something to do, when it is quiet. You don't cast too far; the fish are generally near by. I do sometimes pick anchorages by there fishing potencial. As for casting, it is just method; short leaders, no big back swings, often underhand, and sometimes just lower away. So our rods are short bass rods. Like others, we use hand lines underway. Short spinning rods are what you want, if your not into fishing - casting rods are funny to learn.
Many of the methods discussed hear are great, but for example, fishing a tuna clone at 15 knots in Mass will not catch a mahi-mahi. Go on a local fishing web site.

In my 9 1/2 year circumnavigation, I was able to catch as many fish as I needed (tuna & dolphin) deep sea everywhere, except the Med (caught lots of plastic bags, though).
Never use a pole, as it is nearly impossible to get enough slack on a moving sailboat to reel in w/o tightening the drag too much.
Use a hand line of clothes line size line w/ about ten feet of shock cord tied to the boat (with the line having slack until shock cord is at full extension) as well as the line. A pair of leather gloves soaked in water helps. A quality roller bearing swivel at the lure end is absolutely necessary, to a multi-strand wire crimped leader (150# or so) 6 to 10 feet long to the lure (green & white {Atlantic} blue & white {Pacific or Indian}) 6" plastic squid w/ 1 oz (or so) egg sinker in the head or feathers w/ same weight head (I like the ones w/ the red glass eyes best).
Drag this line from the quarter not the stern (the quarter wake gives the lure more action & it's clear of the boat's turbulence).
The lure should be about twice the length of the boat @ 6 knots, more if faster (I have successfully caught fish as fast as 17 knots), less if slower (you'll get the hang of it quickly).
Remember, the fish are attracted by the boat deep sea, so keep your gear fairly close, but clear of the turbulence directly behind the boat.

Scotty! Scotty downriggers, Scotty rodholders. Out here, you can't catch a salmon without a downrigger (they're like 200ft down), and Scotty is the Big Name. They also have dozens of types of rodholders, from flush-mount to side-mount to rail-mount.

Saw you out with a bunch of people on Kara's Boo last weekend or the one before but didn't get close enough to introduce myself.
What, if anything besides carp, have you caught in Fern? If there's something edible in there I might have to get a license and try out the new BBQ.

I have caught or seen caught on Fern Ridge the normal assortment of warm fresh water species: catfish, carp, bass, suckers, bluegill and crappie. I've been told there are trout in the lake, but I have not seen any. A fishing fanatic friend told me that Field & Stream (?) published an article 15+ years ago describing the W11th channel where it crosses under the railroad bridge and W11th (aka the jungle cruise) in the SE corner of the impoundment as a crappie hotspot. Red colored lures are supposed to be the best. There are supposed to be bass haunting the reeds in and around Inman's Bay, just south of EYC and Tri-pass Ski Club.
The kids used to have fun catching fish, mostly bluegill and crappie with some fingerling bass off the docks in Richardson marina. I've seen a lot of people fishing at the little creek at the north end of the marina where they just put the bridge. They say that can be very good fishing. You couldn't prove it by me, though.

Marine Fishing License Now Required in Connecticut
Effective today (6/15/09) the State of Connecticut now requires a marine fishing license.
There seems to be some vague reciprocal agreement with other states, but the lines of demarcation have yet to be determined with the State of NY.
