Fishing off your sailboat, & Lake Erie

Glad to be back to sailing once again. The only thing I miss with the powerboat is fishing. Don't know why you can't fish off sailboats Anyone doing it on Erie for the elusive Walleye and Perch? The few times I've tried to anchor and still fish the 222 O'Day snaked back and forth on the rode. Boat never stayed in one place. I anchored off the stern when the seas permitted on my Penn Yan to eliminate that. My thought is to use two anchors. As far as trolling seems maybe to troll with about half the head sail to do the 2MPH speeds for a nice troll. Anyone got ideas they will share? Are we blazing a new trail? I have had to downsize my fish cooler to fit in the cockpit on the sailboat. Not going to allow stinky fish in the cabin. Not seen anyone fishing off their sailboat in the western Lake Erie area and the Bass Islands. And have not met anyone doing it, yet.

Back sailing on Lake Erie?????

That ice in that picture looks very fluid to be on Lake Erie *o

There are a lot of days in Western Lake Erie where the wind is pretty sparse. 2 knots trolling speed would be a gift. Why not take those days to start the outboard and troll to your heart's content?

No thanks...

I don't mind catching a trout or bass in a lake or stream. We sail in the ocean... it takes all my effort to get around the lobster bouys in Maine. I can't imagine reeling in a grotesque fish from the deep with spines and stingers and such... unless it was a lobster! That is another story... one doesn't want to be fiddling around those traps... unless they are yours! You could be swimming to shore!

Only problem fishing from a sail boat

is when you catch a big one. Sailing to the Dry Tortugas last year caught a 25 lb black fin tuna, had to douse the sails to bring in the fish. Had 5 ft seas drifted to a beam sea and almost wrecked the boat in the troughs from all the rocking. It was great on the grill Nothing like fresh fish. Have fun if you catch some thing great if not you;re still having fun sailing! ;D

That's my fishing buddy, Bubba,

I also bring my cell phone but it goes first thing into the cabin, on vibrate mode. Lost one to the bottom of the Harbor. As far as catching the big one, I have learned to hove to quickly. Sometimes the boat drifts back toward the fish making it even easier. While on the subject of fishing, just bought an aerator to convert that ice chest into a bait tank. Unfortunately it runs on 2D size batteries. I am rewiring to run on 12v so I can plug into the back of the boat only uses 200 ma. I'll let you know how it works on Monday. We are going after Halibut this Sunday. Couldn't ask for better weather. Frank

do it all the time

I am amazed at how stupid power boaters are. Last year there were about 100 boats out by the crib and I was one of them. Ok, follow me here, it's a 37', cutter rigged sailboat with a 42' mast (plus the 6'-8' to the water takes it to 50'). So we hit the spot we limited out (4 x 30 = 120) on perch the day before. Now follow me....I'll go slow in case there are power boaters reading, or Ross, ....we....were...the....only....sailboat....out....of....100. And we were hitting them. The radio waves were on with everyone asking who was hot. Not that you couldn't see us reeling them in, one after another, but when we were about at 60 (there were three of us) after about an hour, we broadcast our results. Darn if five didn't get right on it and ask what boat we were. So I said "See the only sailboat?" "That be us". And then a few asked.."Next to the big white boat over there?" We told them "No, there are no white boats within miles of us. The nearest boat is blue and one black". They asked where we were and we said "By the Crib...due east of it bout 3/4 mile." Idiots... So yes you can fish off a sailboat. Most I ever took was 20 and we had tons of room, and they STILL complained. So I said "maybe if we all just squeeze together on the aft end and tangle our lines like on Buck's boat, you would feel more like it's real fishing, not this fake stuff."

When my boys were young, we used to troll for Blues while under sail on a Hunter 25. Had a lot of power boat YaHoos yelling at us because THEY were fishing! We held up and waved a rod- didn't seem to mean too much to them. Anyway, with the outboard UP ans sailing only on the main we aparently had the perfect trolling speed with no engine noise so we haulled in a lot of snapper Blues. The 'boys' are in their thirties now -- one is an avid J105 racing sailor an the other is an avid fisherman. We've tried drift fishing for Stripers fron our 28.5 but it's an uncomfortable motion and I'd rather troll les effectively under sail than roll around in the wakes of other boats while drift fishing.

Just for the record,

the power boaters were not fishing. They were washing lures while under power. They had all the rights of any boat under power, but were NOT fishing (fishing is commercial fishing with nets (either trawling (not trolling) or seining) or a using long line (read that miles long with hundreds of hooks)). The only way a recreational fishing boat has any rights over a boat under sail is if they are being overtakn from clear astern. Having said that, they can still make a mess of you and your boat, so leave them in their ignorance, wave, smile and say "Thank You", no matter what they yell. Steve Alchemist C-380

the deal on perch

Went to the boat show, which was part science scow too. ODNR was there amongst others. One of the displays had Eels in it. So I asked. Turns out you can't eat them, that there are 13 native species, but the one that is causing the problems is an import. It kills the fish while the others just get a meal and leave. Another tank was filled with zebra mussels, another unwelcome guest. Seems their major negative is that they ingest lots of PCB's and other contaminant's and small fish eat em by the score, which are then eaten...and up the food chain. Since the introduction, the scientists noticed that the PCB levels DOUBLED in ALL fish, from perch to walleye, in all sizes too. Yum.

The Cleveland Boat Show

letterman, Did you see the Harbor 25 sailboat? Nice classic style keel boat. I spent more time drooling over this beauty. Found out there is a 30 footer on the drawing board too. I missed the info on the Perch and Walleye. I came to North Ridgeville earlier on Friday to have time at the show only to find out it did not open until 3:00 in the afternoon. By that time half the day was shot! OH Well
