We will be cruising in the San Juans and Canadian Gulf Islands in the spring and fall. I would like to start catching some of our food. We have a crap trap and are getting a shrimp trap. I am clueless about fishing gear though. Is there one basic setup that would accomodate the various kinds of fish and fishing in that area? Any advice about equipment and techniques is much appreciated. Thanks!

You may wish to peruse the legal requirements.

We've dabbled a little...

off the H26 over the last few years from South Puget Sound through the San Juans, Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound and points in between. Our experience has been not much different from the coastal fishing we do off the Oregon coast with respect to techniques and methods. However, I would advise watching the US and Canadian regulations, particularly with respect to the shellfish. Seasons vary widely over small distances through specialized regions and many protected areas are identified as conducive to shellfish contaminants even though they may be technically "open". Also, north of Vancouver City, the depths pretty much constrain the crabbing but there are some nice areas for prawns. We did have some luck in the southern areas with the little crab 'snares', a lot more convenient to pack and stow. A question that has occured to me, that I have never heard a good answer to, is that, technically, most jurisdictions prohibit disassembly of fish onboard to protect the right of DFW to measure the catch; yet, if one is going to prepare a fresh catch for a meal onboard, the fish/crabs/whatever never make it to shore. Anyone clear on this?

Obviously... Tim

Steve - you will find your answer in the first link I listed.

For instance - the crab shell must be left attached to the creature until it is either consumed, or arrives at your legal residence. This way (if you get inspected) you can prove your catch was male and of legal size. There is a lot of honour system involved here that unfortunately gets ignored by many immigrant groups (I think you know what I mean).

John re traps

We have a standard collapsable rectangular metal crab trap with 100' of line and a buouy. Have not used it yet. Planning to buy a collapsable shrimp trap from an outfit in Seattle. I have been reading up on the Washington and BC regulations. I got interested in the fishing idea because the BC license is for both shellfish and fish and at over $100 for the license I figured I might as well get a rod and reel and try it out. I have some trout fishing but am new at salt water fishing. The salmon univeristy site is interesting. I realize that the regs vary significantly from WA to BC and within close-by areas. I'll be careful. What is the 3 mile rule?

I use a 5 foot trolling rig with 80 lb line. It isn't getting away. I use a couple of the lures from walmart the deep divers that go about 25 to 30 feet deep and run it abourt 100 feet behind the boat.

Fishing in the Gulf Islands

Randy, I fish the area all summer. Crabs, square collapsable trap, 60 feet of floating line is plenty, use salmon heads (they give them away at some grocery stores) or chicken backs. Take males only and get a size measurement device. Red rock or dungeness, easy to catch. Watch for closed areas on the web. Prawns, proper prawn trap, 300 feet of line, depths 275-350 feet. Same food as for crabs. Hard work. Having an electric line hauler would be helpful. Garden hose reel works for the line. Commercial dog-food pellets and prawn perfume are useless. Hope this helps, Pete
