Oh Yeah! We've fished while sailing...

We have fished on at CT52 out of Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica, a couple of times while under sail. At times we were pulling in fish as quickly as the hooks hit the water. We used lures, not live bait. A mackeral was having a particularly bad day and it puked on our friend. I thought she was going to puke too. We had a young Tico boy as crew, and he cleaned the fish and iced them down. Fresh fish for dinner! The boat is owned by Flamingo Marina.

I have referred several times to friends who live abourd their Kelly-Peterson. They recently arrived in the Bahamas and I got an e-mail from them yesterday. Seems they still haven't cleared Bahamian customs because they are sitting on a really outlying key. They were getting tired of eating the left over stuff from the passage and hoping to have several other cruisers over for dinner and drinks so they fished. Nothing. Hours and hours. They can see the fish. Nothing. Eventually they get fed up and go off in the RIB to check out another cove. Halfway there they start noticing the stingrays flying around under them. Back the boat and retrieve the spear gun. Back to the shoal and thwak - they take a ray. They tell me the things fight harder than you could imagine. Anyway - I can't think of a better first party in paradise meal than fresh stingray in lemon and butter with capers - except maybe rum with rum and rum. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Fishing's great.

Out of Freeport, TX, the fishing's great. We would troll for King Fish, and drift for sharks. Since we spent more time with hooks in the water, we often caught more fish than real sport fishing boats. A round bottom sailboat has a smoother ride than a regular fishing boat, so we could fish during less than idea seas. Best of all, we refueled with a 2.5 tank, while the real fishing boats brought out their Visa's. Marlon

My brother in-law and I took our kids fishing. We rowed out to a concrete marker and fished off the marker. His son cast his rod and on the first try hooked me in the life jacket. After a while the same boy cast again only this time the follow though took him and the rod into the water. My brother in-law grabed him by his life jacket and pulled him out of the water, without the rod. About two hours later, just as we were about to leave, my brother in-law reeled in his line and it had a line hooked on it. He pulled on the line and got the rod we lost earlyer back. Aren't kids fun?

Fish, Lobsters, Concha , and more.

We fish, almost every time we sail, or motor. Ches. Bay, Ocean, And rivers along the ICW. We love to clean the fish on the bow when there fresh . I actually re aranged the stern area, wind generater, stern anchor etc. to make for easier trolling and fighting. Check out our pic on the cat 36 page.

When sailing I do two things, sail and sleep. If by chance I ain't doin' one or the other then I thinkin' bout 'em. And that's all I have to say about that.

Trolling in the Gulf of Mexico

We troll with a hand line as well, but keep it wound on a "yo-yo", a plastic spool, when not in use. When in use, the yo-yo is attached to the stern rail with a stout bungee cord. When you get a strike, the yo-yo will knock on the transom alerting you to the potential dinner.

I allways have a line inthe water when Im sailing. When im offshore I drage a white feather when Im in yellow taile country, and a marader shark lure if I want a good fight.

Huge Fish

We hooked on to and landed a 70# halibut at the entrance to Strait of Juan de Fuca. What an exciting 20 minutes. We finally had to shoot it with a 22 cal. to gaff it and get it into the boat. It pretty much took up the whole cockpit floor on our Cat. 30. I stick to salmon these days, and catch one just about anytime during the summer and fall. Love to fish off the boat. Cold sailing these days and way too much wind lately. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

I LIKE TO TROLL WHEN SAILING AROUND LAKE LANIER. MY SON AND I SPEND THE NIGHT ON THE BOAT ANCHORED NEAR ONE OF THE ISLANDS IN THE SUMMER. WE BOTTOM FISH FOR CATS AT NIGHT. EARLY IN THE MORNINGS WE WALK THE SHORELINE OF LARGER ISLANDS LOOKING FOR FEEDING CARP.WE TRY TO HOOK UP WITH THESE WITH FLY RODS.WE HAVE HAD WONDERFUL TIMES TOGETHER SAILING AND FISHING.

Wrap it up

ONE FISH, TWO FISH....NO FISH

I have never been a fisherman. I guess it comes from trying to catch fish in farm ponds as a kid, not realizing that there wern't any fish in them. I get bored fast but, when sailing offshore I often trail a line. I use a bicycle inner tube to provide a shock absorber in case of a "major" strike. But the only "major" strike I can remember was a crate with a seagull purched on it. Other than that, I did find the line parted one morning, so I guess I did hook something during the night. Another crate? My theory is that the fish know when a hook is presented by someone whose heart is not really into fishing, and they leave it alone.

I don't have a sail boat but I want to sail when I vacation in Costa Rica. Fishing from a sail boat sounds great! Where's the best place to sail and fish in Costa Rica? I've never been there.

types of fishing

what type of fishing do most of you do on the sailboat? if trolling, what types of lures and catches, and if at anchor, what do you typically use for bait/lures and do you just drop the line or cast and types of fish caught. I find it a pain to carry bait on board for a long trip and would like alternatives for fishing while at anchor. I'm in the northeast.
