Hard to land

High freeboard, bloody messes, fishy smells. All problems to be sure. Most times I would rather just be sailing, But there are other times:):)

" go fly a kite"

There was a sailer ,out of Charleston, who rigged a kite that operated as an out rigger..He trolled for sail fish and according to reports did very well. I understand he would sail as far out as the Gulf Stream ( 60 miles) and fish. The method was quite straight foreward as the kite/outrigger would perform as effectly as the ones used on the power boats i.e. dropping line, with slack, after a sail fish strike..

Cuban Yoyo

I daysail my 40’ Hunter single handed off Sandy Hook on the East Coast. I troll using a Cuban Yoyo since I find that rods just get in the way of everything on deck.. I usually bring home something for diner, mostly Striped Bass or Blues. I keep Ice on board and filet the fish on the dock. And it’s a beautiful feeling after a full day of sailing, calling home to say “I have fish for Diner."

Of course

Boats are made for fishing, I race my C-27 quite alot and do very well, but I can't help the urge to troll a Rapala when I see birds working the water. I've caught yellowtail, barracuda, seabass, sharks, bonito and even halibut using this method. We also stop and bait fish for other kinds of fish. Why would anyone object to doing this? I keep my boat very clean, salt water washes off fish blood quickly.

Hunter 28 Watauga Lake, TN.
Fish Story of the Year!

We sail our Hunter 28 on one of Tennessee's high mountain lakes, Watauga Lake, in the Northeastern corner of the state. Many times I had noticed fishermen trolling lead-core lines or using down-riggers in search of lunker trout, which hide in Watauga's dark, cold depths. Since they usually troll at one or two knots - and since that sometimes matches my best speed over ground - I figured I'd rig a lead-core trolling rig to the stern rail. It works like a charm! In light wind, we always rig the trolling line, and sometimes we are rewarded by a beautiful brown or rainbow trout. My last "lunker" brown weighed in at 7 lb., and fed seven back at the sail dock. We even got our story detailed in the outdoors column of the local newspaper. Fishing and sailing? You bet!

when I get the chance

I have a HUnter 240 which does not have a backstay. Makes it very easy to fish fom. In the early mornings, Ill sit on the stern seat and drown a few crickets and drinks coffee til the wind pipes up and then go sailing.

Absolutely!

Patti and I (and of course, Grace, Ship's Cat/Admiral) sail an Aloha 27, not a very popular vessel in the U.S. apparently. Pretty much everytime we're cruising under sail, we throw a mackerel spoon in. Our best day's catch was 19 mackerel on St. George's Bay (Nova Scotia's Northern Coast!) Gives Grace something to do as well when we land them! Aloha!

Going to give it a try

My boating buddy is an avid fisherman. He has been after me for years to fish off my boat, either at anchor or while trolling. I haven't done it yet, but plan to. It will be another fun thing to do on the boat! Bill on STARGAZER

Of courseI have to fish. There is no better time than getting up when the sun comes out with a cup of coffee and a fishing rod on the other hand.aaaaa how many times many of us wake up and see the fish jumping and we say(IWISH I HAD A FISHING POLE)I never go out to sea with out a pole thats just adding to the fun.

History

The first sailors were fishermen. Thats the way it was until recent history. Have we all become preppy sailors?
