Fish Finders

I have a new H260, and I know I need a depth finder. I had intended to just mount the finder probe on the transom. I like the Hummingbird DX200, a fish finder, which also has a second probe for speed. Has anyone been successful at mounting the probes on the transom? Does the rudder confuse the readings? Or is it better to shoot throught the hull? I don't want to put a hole in the hull, so that's out. I assume the speed probe has to wrap around the transom?Thanks,Frank

Speed and depth

I installed a Ratheon DiData and inquire about help here. I have a 240 and finaly decided to punch two 2" hole thrue the hull. They are behind the water ballast. It was very very easy to do and do not have a single drop of water in the boat. The kell does not affect the reading at all.good luck.

Not happy with transom mount

I installed a Raytheon fishfinder using the transom mount method and have 2 problems.No way to mount the transduc near the centerline due to the rudder, so when the boat is on a starboard tack with more that 20 degree heel the 'ducs out of the water.Also, I was never able to get a reliable speed indication from the paddle wheel. I have a 240 and am not real keen on the idea of thru-hull for a new boat. With my luck, Murphy's Law will take over. I have thought about glueing the speed paddlewheel to the bottom about 2 feet from the stern, between a line of the motor and the rudder and centerboard.Mounting it off the motor mount does not work. I only get speed to read about half the time.

The trouble with putting this unite on the transom is that when you heal over or are in rolling seas the transducer comes out of the water. Through hulls are very easy to put it and a good stop to put it is behind the water ballast close to the bildge(this is a poor excuse for a bilge) pump. I have never had a drop of water leak in 4 years after installing mine.Jeff Peltier.
