Does anyone have any thoughts on where to site a fishfinder in the new 356 ? I want to locate wrecks for diving without boring another hole in the hull if poss. My boat will have bilge keels ie no keel in midline but 1 either side forming a tripod with the rudder on which the boat can stand when on the hard.

fishfinder

Any place in the hull that is solid fiberglass (not cored w/balsa or anything else) and is out of turbulent water flow will work for a glued in transducer. No thru-hull needed. Check your chosen spot by setting transducer in KY jelly first to make sure it works, then glue it down. Hunter ought to have a recommendation for this. Bilge keels, huh? I wonder if that's available here, or just in UK. What is the draft?

Single Hole for Speed and Fishfinder

On a 40.5, I replaced the original Raymarine ST60 speed transducer with the Raymarine L755 speed/depth combo transducer. It used the same hole and was easy to install. The L755 is a black and white fishfinder / chartplotter(C-Map) mounted at the nav station. I connected it, via HSB, to the Raymarine RL70C color radar at the cockpit console. We use it to find bottom formations and wrecks to dive on. We also replaced the original Raymarine ST60 depth transducer with the Interphase TwinScope Sonar transducer to give us a second depth reading. The Twinscope is a forward and side scanning sonar. Between the two units we don't miss much on the bottom.

Thanks

Thanks guys, most helpful. btw the draft is 5feet, same as the shoal keel, as I understand it the US boats were fitted with bilge keels over here ut now the whole boat is built in UK. Performance is same as shoal keel but boat is said to be a bit stiffer and point a little higher.

Defective sounder

I work for a marine store, and I would avoid any Raymarine product right now. The 265, 365 and 465 all have serious defects in the software. I called them several times to get a fix for several customers. One solution was to buy the more expensive sounder, but the tech admitted that also has problems. Another solution was to turn off the auto duel feature, and another was to send to them for replacement. Real problems for a once great product name.

Ken - Raymarine Fishfinder problem?

Ken, You indicated that the 265, 365 and 465 all have serious defects in the software and that you called them several times to get a fix for several customers. One solution was to buy the more expensive sounder, but the tech admitted that also has problems. I have the L755. Is that one of the more expensive sounders he is talking about and if so, what are the known problems? Please help me out with more specifics if possible. I have not experienced any problems so far. You also said we should avoid any Raymarine product right now. Is that ALL products, or just their sounders? Thanks for your input.

Sounder problem answers?

Mickey, it looks like the problems are in the lower end units, like the dual frequency 265, 365 and the 470. The problem shows up one to two months after instaled. The 470 retailing at close to $500 is not cheap. Your unit on the other hand is top end and most likely, if no problem has shown up yet, will be trouble free. In eletronics, when new, most of the time, you turn it on first time it should work, if not instalation might be the problem or a bad chip, meaning the unit is bad. These units worked fine for several months, then the problem started, this is more likely a software bug and has shown up in many units returned to our store. Here is another thought on Raymarine formerly Raytheon, it seems that after Raymarine broke off from Raytheon, quality has gone down. I subscribe to Practical Sailor and have seen the Raytheon VHF radio slip from a #1 rating to a #3. The radar and top end systems still seem to work very well and the radar was top rated by PS most recently, but the support and quality is no longer there. It is unreal to be told to switch off parts of a system to get it to work after it had worked fine for several months. To send the unit in for a month and be told they need to send you a new one because they couldn't get it to work. To have a Raymarine tell a customer to buy a upper end model and then say it has problems also. In our store we don't encourage the sale of Raymarine products even though we get sale's insentives for selling them. Garmin, Furuno and Lowrance are what we recomend, these brands see a far less defect rate and have excellent tech support. Garmin having software updates online for free on most of their products. I feel this is a long answer, but I wanted to give you a fair account of my rating of Raymarine.

PS Sounder

Mickey,The sounder looses the bottom at 100'-200', it sometimes blinks off and on, one unit turned on the simulator, several units blinked off and on showing the bottom then showing nothing. Like I said if your unit hasn't developed this problem after the first few months chances are it will never happen. Out of over 70 units sold about ten showed these problems that we know of, any others may never have come back to our store.
