I am looking for a well-built, easy to learn, trailerable with a minivan daysailer. I have looked heavily at flying scots, and catalina capri 18's and 22's. I have a wife and kids to bring along. The rhodes 19 and the Mariner seem like good candidates for my needs, but I have a few questions: how long is the cockpit bench, how roomy is the cockpit, can I trailer and rig without killing myself. Any help/thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Andy Irwin

if you are only looking at daysailing

then either the daysailer II, Mariner, and Sandpiper are all good choices, with generous cockpits and the latter two provide some space to hide out in a rain, or have a snooze. The daysailer, lets you store all your junk on the boat, and not have to bring it home, but you would have to add a cuddy hatch cover to lock it up. The mariners after 1969 had a cover on the back, before that they had an open back, like the daysailer. If you plan to camp occasionally then the mariner or sandpiper may be better suited to your needs, although, it is crowded with four sleeping. If you plan on cruising, then you will need a significantly larger boat to be comfortable. I own a daysailer, and only daysail. It is easy to launch and retrieve, handles well, is lots of fun, yet provides a good amount of stability. I often sail solo, but have gone with as many as four. I understand it can hold seven, but I think it would be quite crowded with that many. It could sleep two, if there was no junk in the cuddy, and both people were less than 5' 9" tall. The cockpits in both the daysailer and mariners are huge, 7' 4" for the daysailer!

Just did this

I just went through this and purchased an O'day Daysailor (1982) - have had it out solo 6x and w/wife and two young kids 3x and it is a great boat for newer sailers, family, little kids, and daysailing, very stable, very easy to trailer and launch/retrieve (takes about 15-20" to set up/break down).

Rhodes 19

Just a note; my first boat was a Rhodes 19 center bd. Great boat. It was a 67' with the wood floor boards. My comment, the mast on Rhodes 19's steps through the deck and is taller than a Mariner with extra rigging. Its's a hand full to step, not like the Mariner.

Oday 222

The 222 in my opinion is the best choice since it should fill you needs longer then any of the other boats. It is easy to sail, large enough to be confortable for weekends and a great boat. It is also one of the pretties small boats. I was able to buy the one I owned for 5K with trailer. After 3 years and a lots of elbow greese I sold it for the same. Jim
