We are interested in criusing and are thinking of buying our first sailboat. We are presently looking at getting a 77 Hunter 27 with a 8hp Yanmar Diesel. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this boat. Regards

compared to what?

Check out the owner reviews on this site. Unless you are comparing it to another make or model, about all you can say is the H27 is a good boat for coastal cruising.

H27

We had a 77h27. Pros: - Sleeps four comfortably. - Cockpit was big enough for six - Inexpensive Cons: Too many to enumerate, but mostly related to the condition of the particular boat and the lack of care it received over it's lifetime. Get marine survey and listen to the surveyor. If you want more details on our particular experience you can contact me at dougtinva@hotmail.com.

Great Boat...

I have a 78 27 and love it. The 8hp yanmar is a bullet proof engine although it may be under powered for the coast. You may have problems making headway in a tidal current. The boat is solid but I would have a survey done. I agree that the condition of the boat is dependent on the previous owners care. Generally speaking it is comfortable and roomy for 2-4 people. I have done many upgrades to mine since it was a very basic boat. Added 2 batteries for house, 1 for starting, charger, instruments, electric pressure water, to name a few. If surveyor says it is in good shape, they are a good boat for the maoney.

Great 1st boat

I've hav my 1978 H-27 for a long time now. The boat on a whole is bulletproof, if a little plain Jane. It's a great boat to lean on and if you treat it well it will outlast you. Condition is the key. I agree with the comments on the 8hp Yanmar. Bullet Proof if a little small. If your boat has the Renault maybe you may need to look some more. I hear that the Renault is OK but parts are hard to get. In a boat like this re-powering really isn't worth it. I have the shoal keel, so I don't point well but I can moor in the public harbor and seldom get stuck in the sand bars around the North Shore of LI, NY The H-27 isn't a Rolls Royce, but the it doesn't cost like one. It's great for weekend fun and short trips. For my long sails I become the crew for friends. Good Luck

Underpowered 8 HP

I had (just sold) a 27' Hunter 1980 and it had the updated 2GM, and it was just right. I would definitely look for one with the 2 cyl, will be easier to sell if you want to move up to the next size boat. The 27' is a nice boat and prices are pretty reasonable for a first boat. Good price range to buy and sell. We just moved up to a 34' and big difference in prices from 30' on up. Good luck
