I had not sailed in 28 years. On March 21, 2008 I decided to make a cruse from Edgewater MD to Tangier VA. I had wanted to get the boat hauled before the trip, but could not get anyone to return my phone calls in Edgewater. We started out at 2 PM with heavy winds 15 to 25 knots. We were on a nice Reach. The 1972 Cal T/4 sailed very well. The winds reduced to about 8 knots around 7 PM. I made a decided to sail straight through after we reached our 15 mile stop point. There was a full moon and no commercial traffic. I had preprogrammed my hand held GPS with all the maim channel buoys and a course to follow. What a great device (GPS). We arived in Tangier, VA 18 Hours latter. The sun came out to warm us from the 37 degrees we sailed in all night. It was just like riding a bike, you never forget!! I can't wait to check out some of the great sails that came with the boat. If anyone has a Cal t/4 24 ft. let me know and we can swap information on the sails and hardware. Gene Bunt

is it not? I am always surprised to get back into the cockpit after only a few months of not sailing and trying to remember all the the little details of sailing my particular boat. Maybe we all have some sort of "sailing memory" similar to muscle memory? Good luck with the boat and I know you'll love being back on the water again!

Tangier is by far one of my favorite spots to sail to. You are right about the GPS. It usually takes us about 10 to 12 hours. Although getting in there can be treacherous, we still love to go back again and again, since the island is full of good people of the bay that are unfortunately becoming a dying breed. Did you pull into Parks Marina by chance and see my good buddy James? He must be pushing 80 by now, but will live to be over a 100 I'm sure. We always stop there and use slip #13 and have been since the late 80's. He has to be one of the nicest folks on the island. Hopefully we will run into you up there sometime.

Glad to hear of another sailor on the Bay!! Tangier is really nice but don't forget to try Smith Island. I haven't been there in two years but they have a bed and breakfast there and the slip fees were only $1 a night. Nice people there. I really enjoy running into other cruisers and talking to them. Sharing experiences makes us all so much richer!
