My 1980 Yanmar 30 hp with 5890 hrs had been running a bit rough until today when it stalled at idle a couple times, then had trouble starting and also was smoking a lot.

most likely injectors. could be low compression dose it stop smoking at high R.P.M? and do you smell fuel in the smoke.

have you changed the fuel filters?.... when you are having running issues with a diesel engine, the FIRST thing you should do before asking questions is to change the filters... they are usually the problem, AND the first thing we need to know to be able to help point you in the right direction is to KNOW that the filters are not causing an obstruction of fuel.

just because you have white smoke doesnt mean there is enough fuel or fuel pressure to run...

Most probably the water temp. in and around Bayfield Wisconsin is approaching 32°F or thereabouts. Your cooling water can significantly lower the current engine operating temperature. Idling with COLD inlet water may be drawing out more heat than the normal heat transfer due to combustion (at cruising rpm).

Check the output temperatures of the fresh water circuit at your heat exchanger; if significantly lower than 180°F that is one of the possibilities for poor engine performance - the combustion chambers are operating at less than optimum oil-ignition temperature.
Use an infrared 'indirect' thermometer to check.
If running the engine near max. cruise rpm while underway (allowing the engine to full 'heat soak' to 'normal' internal operating temperature for 30-60 minutes) corrects the perceived problem; then, there is quite probably no need to seek out to discover 'other problems' and then suspect the 'problem' is: a too cold engine, too much idling with very cold inlet water.

Good Old Boats just had an article that discussed an engine issue with symptoms of smoking and stalling - the culprit was a blocked mixing elbow. An issue most of us tend to forget about.

I agree that it could be a blocked mixing elbow. When it happened on my boat the exhaust came back through the engine and out the air intake. It took me a week to clean up all the black oily soot.
